my personal recommendations are:
cap for diving and anti-poke; hulk for peeling (anti-dive), anti-air, and defence; and thor for crowd control, deployables management, and if you need some range.

you'll enjoy the game a lot more if you don't play snoreneto and a walking shield.

dr strange is really powerful if you want to lead the team into fights or push the cart, magento is a better all around defensive character. i've been playing since season0 and have lord rank on Strange, The Thing and Captain America, but can't play Mag for shit. If you do learn strange, you HAVE to learn how to effectively and quickly put up portals. Your team will expect you to be able to make a quick portal over the objective for last minute attacks during overtime and stuff, and if you can't do that you are better off playing someone else and hoping another team mate can do it.

Play Thing and just PAWNCH and never die. Seriously, Thing feels so good to play, he feels like he's DPS.

If youre alone, you really need good healers to keep you in the fight, and a brain that tells you when to STOP FIGHTING AND RETURN TO YOUR TEAM. thats a huge part of playing tank most people forget, but its especially important with the thing, since its so easy to get into clobber mode and lose track of everything because youre so busy brawling

Strange is easier to tank with because of the big shield with big health. Damage is okay with him too but shots are slow.
For dps either go for a retarded punisher or go for any other range dps if you are new, melee requires you to know the game a little bit so you don't get insta fucked.
For healer pick whatever actually but rocket and the shark are the easiest to learn. Luna is also easy but you have to know how to aim, so there is that.

Strange is actually fun if you learn him. Portals. Are useful but hard to master.
But his basic attack and melee are actually good when you learn his purge the darkness ability.
His basic attack pierces through enemies so you can hit multiple enemies if your positioning is good and since you are supposed to be relatively up close, you can easily combo with the whip and then fuck up multiple enemies with the AoE darkness attack

You should play some Quick Matches first. Try to learn a couple of character of each type so you can fill. So, in other words learn both Dr. Strange and Magneto. Mr. Fantastic is a pretty tanky character as well and is probably a good pick for a Duelist if you prefer to be frontline. For Strategists I would say learn how to Rocket, there obviously aren't any that are meant to be running up to the front line very often.

Dr Strange is good as a jack-of-all trade tank that can both brawl and shield since you're rewarded for staying long in the fight with a nuke that can kill squishies.
Magneto is better defensively but he's kinda boring in practice.

Most Jeff's are not smart enough to use the ult near the team though. That puddle is always 50 yards away but it's mainly due to it being an added mechanic instead of being there originally. It still sucks though cause it really forces everyone into a easy groot ult combo

Her downside is she can't do anything else while it's active. Mantis can still play while she heals and she gives bonus health. Rocket can still play and his gives a damage boost, plus it doesn't emanate from him so he can position it out of the line of fire. Cloak and Dagger can also still play.
