To be fair, Nintendo screwed Game Freak with the dex that generation by not making the data backwards compatible. Unlike what they did with SWSH, Game Freak spent the rest of gen 3 making it up to the fans by bending over backwards to give them other ways to complete the dex.
In all honesty, though, a lot of people had already lost interest in Pokemon before Gen 3 even started. It was Johto that actually killed Pokemania. The games were a Kanto rehash, the anime had become unwatchable, the movies started flopping. Crystal is still the worst-selling mainline game.

It is crazy how B&W is literally the turning point for Pokemon and it is because Masuda was gone. What has Pokemon actually done since then that had a massive impact on the series going forward to the point that it is hard to imagine Pokemon without it?

I mean Gen 1-5 gave us: Natures, IVs/EVs being figured out, Natures, Abilities, Held Items, Physical/Special Split, making it so types aren't JUST physical or JUST special, Double Battles, etc. Pokemon is still based around those. The series needs to add something else like those. It needs a new thing that is NOT a generational gimmick that goes away and is ultimately irrelevant and just used to make the game easier.

Doesn't effect the battles, and they have not used it to its full potential. You could do a lot with an actual open world, 3D pokemon. Instead they have continued to half ass it by just making large, relatively open and barren places with a few trees and just Pokemon spawning out of thin air to walk around.

They could have had more environmental interactivity. See wild pokemon battling each other, drinking from lakes, climbing up trees, sunbathing, lifting up rocks to look for food, etc. But like everything else it really only became 3D because selling a 2D sprite based game in 2025 is unacceptable, and considering the backlash and response to BD/SP I think that is an accurate statement.

Gen 5 is not my favorite anon. However, with the benefit of hindsight most people do look back at Gen 5 and believe that it was peak and then everything after was worse, which I do agree with. My favorite is Emerald cause of nostalgia and it being the only time I could actually play with other people instead of just battling the elite 4 over and over like I did in Blue and Silver.
Obviously Gen 5 has issues, every game does. Gen 1 is a buggy mess. Gen 2 has a kanto that is like 5 feet wide and a bad level curve. Gen 3 has way too much surfing. Gen 4 felt like they were trying as hard as they could to stuff every feature of the DS inside of it and in general the pacing of the game is not great.

The thing is though is it felt like from Gen 1-5 Gamefreak was like "Okay, how do we make the games better?" From then on it just felt like they stopped caring.

All the smaller studios basically got bought out by the bigger ones over time and that's part of what's killed gaming in the modern era. The smaller devs ran by people that cared are mostly gone and got absorbed by a mega corporation. You can track a company like Blizzard as they kept getting bought out by bigger and bigger companies until they're now owned by Microsoft and the game quality kept suffering after each subsequent buyout as each corporate overlord was even more soulless than the last. Gen 6 to 10 is them actually putting in effort to do something new and having varying levels of success.

The only games of his that you could argue were good right out the gate are BW. XY maybe (better than vanilla RS and DP, at least), but it had tons of room for growth. It’s not just about the battle frontier. If anything, that’s the least important element.

Expanding the regional dex by over 50 additional species and greatly improving the story, dialogue, player character designs, and gym progression are all factors in how DP and Platinum are worlds apart. DP has good bones, but that’s all they are: bones. Barebones. DP feels like an unfinished beta. I don’t put Plat in S and DP in F, but I do tend to place Platinum in A tier and DP in C tier. The things that most affect my personal player experience all changed vastly even if the most fundamental structures underneath did not.

RGB, GS, and BW (and arguably SM) are all better baseline games than RS and DP

Even in normal companies being the director does not mean that you answer to no one. And that's even more true when the whole company ultimately has to answer to nintendo.
Masuda was clearly more competent than the people they've had running things since. And the issues with the games he directed were easily addressed. A less retarded leadership structure could have allowed them to produce platinums while skipping the diamonds and pearls.
