I'm playing through this game for the first time (verdant wind) and I don't understand why I'm supposed to see this character as some evil villain. She's been perfectly kind and lovely to me the whole game.

I don't remember that route trying to paint Rhea as evil, only the Black Eagles route does that while the rest she's either morally grey or nonexistent. Claude does wonder out loud what Fodlan would be like without her, and you can even ask if he hopes that she's dead, but even with all that he still wants to save her even if it is just to mainly satiate his own curiosity.

The whole vessel thing is a fucked up thing to do though, and nobody defends her on that front, Seteth especially gives Rhea a big "What the fuck did you do?" grilling at one point.

Even worse, it's not her fault. What happened with Byleth was an unexpected accident. She just expected the stone to act as an artificial heart, like with Sitri. The only "bad" part is that, when seeing Byleth again, she gets excited and tries to capitalize on a delusion she gave herself that (you) were Sothis. And the only time she gets mad with you about it is if you quite literally betray her.

I don't think that's right, I'm pretty sure that Annette and some of the Church characters also just vanish from the game if you don't recruit them.
Also I think Mercedes' ending if she falls in Act 1 is more depressing than Marianne's fate.

Annette is at the end of Crimson Flower.
Same with Catherine, but she can also be an enemy in Bernie/Petra's paralogue if on CF.
Manuela and Hanneman are in Dimitri's paralogue.
Alois and Shamir are in chapter 15 of CF.
Marianne is the ONLY one you never fight somewhere after the timeskip. She's only ever fought in the mock battle at Grondor.

Dedue was a killing machine in my game and while he falls off late game he still kills everything he just has low res so you have to be careful with mages

I made my Hilda invest in Heavy Armor and now she's an absolute fucking tank who takes pretty much no damage except from mages (even that has been mitigated a bit due to giving her the hexlock shield). It's really funny seeing her talk like she's this delicate flower while wearing heaps of plate mail
