I was going to say something else, but basically this comment embodies the crux of what my response is. It is a silly think to be surprised about something so arbitrary, and self dependent, rather than substance dependent. Whether somebody or another has good taste is arbitrarily determined...by whether or not you feel they do.

I've thankfully never had the hangups about telling people what video games I liked that a lot of /v/ros do. I'm almost always the guy with the best taste in the room, but that's because I am me. Of course I think I have the best taste.

The only truly uncomfortable vidya conversations I've had were pretty much always just people who wouldn't take no for an answer when I declined to play Call of Duty with them.

I think the disconnect is because of how people actually engage with the medium. For some people they're genuine hobbyists that play a wide variety of genres and likely engage more with singleplayer games that give you engagement through narrative or mechanical mastery. For the average person, they're more likely to play multiplayer games like shooters and really engage more with socialization and games are just a really convenient medium to accomplish this. So for them, the games aren't something they want to talk about themselves, but instead they want to talk about the experiences they have in life and had in the game during their social experiences.

It's not like if someone likes the same game as you, you're going to inherently get along with them. People who play and enjoy the same games also get into conflict with each other or at the very least, aren't inherently friendly, as this place shows.
