The only reason I left 7 was because 7 doesn't have USB2.0 drivers in its installer, which meant I couldn't actually click or type anything when trying to install it on a new motherboard which only had 2.0 ports. Adding the drivers was just slightly too technical for me to attempt at the time.
This time I'm just abandoning windows for linux when I get a similar issue. I'm better at technology than I used to be.
Still not sure which distro to go with. I've heard Bazzite is currently the one most people are recommending for games.

If your router's firewall is up to date and functional, you can run any version of Windows you want without concern.

I am running a barebones version of Win10 LTSC with everything unnecessary ripped out. Security updates, especially those written by Microsoft pajeets, are fucking worthless and never provided any protection in the first place; it's a marketing gimmick and fearmongering to get people to switch to 11. Windows has always been a piss-easy system to crack, so it's not like your updates can actually stop anyone who knows their shit from getting access.
I keep all important files and data on separate drives that I only connect in case of necessity. There is nothing of worth on my PC proper, and I just sweep it with Malwarebytes once in a while.
Once Win10 is completely unable to support new software, much like Win7 today, I will switch to Mint. Or maybe SteamOS, which is essentially the same.

I only did it because my last computer physically died. Without the bloatware editions, Windows 11 can run on practically any system that can support 7, though that's largely because without the bloatware it's just 7 with a facelift.

Use the tiny11 builder script. It takes an official Win11 ISO and rips everything bad out at the install level. Combine that with the Chris Titus tech tool to tweak the settings. You get a small as fuck, performant win11 install.

Latest Windows is surprisingly good in things that actually matter. It has a decent terminal now, you can install WSL if you need POSIX stuff, the UI does not finally look decent out of the box, without any ricing, but also has had some usability improvements (taskbar and tray are way better now and settings finally more or less consolidated in one place instead of scattered around a billion control panel applets is worth the upgrade just by itself).
Performance-wise I've seen no difference with 10 (but I'm also not running a 10 y/o toaster so idk, maybe 3rd world brown people would have some issues there).

Personally I don't really mind the menus and I actually like the new settings (all of the old control panel stuff is still there if you need it for some reason). As for online account - just use an enterprise edition or choose to join a domain and create a local user when installing.

I don't think /g/ has ever given good advice on anything. They are also quite behind on a lot of things and most of them seem to get their infomation from Steve Burke, Linus from LTT, JaysTwoCents, Paul's Hardware and other mainstream sites. Of course through in Louis Rossmann and Fireship for the deep cuts.

I recently installed 10 IoT LTSC when I switched my SSD a few months ago but I am considering switching to 7 since I don't use any game launchers or play any games that require 10 or 11. Would there be any workarounds that I would need to do to get 7 running on hardware from a few years ago?

I am using a Linux distro after I got pissed off at how bad 11 was fucking my system. Would uninstall Edge and use debloat, and all of it would come back come the next install. Finally got tired and switched to Arch. It has issues, but almost everything works fine with a bit of search engine shenanigans and knowhow. It is technically a Nyaarch install, but I'm having fun; fuck you.

Woke up after blacking out to a suprise Linux, but it was harder to get everything up and going and I eventually switched back to Windows 7. But I can't keep going with 10 or 11. They just got too damn shitty. I have to admit, I often don't know that the fuck I'm doing with this system, but the Arch wiki helps out a lot, and I have this little gremlin on my desktop to provide me morale support when I break shit. Most games I own are working now, and everything runs so much fucking faster compared to that awful bloatware. The last time I really used a shell command system was on Windows 95 lol.

I couldn’t even play 10bit mkv files on it. It cannot detect dolby atmos and hdr. On windows I literally just plug in my tv and drag a window over there and it works. On linux it took me an hour of fucking around with config files and settings and still didnt work

Arch is what I switched to around when 7 was pushing people to upgrade to 10 and I didn't want to. As for why, because it gets all the latest packages, has the best wiki and when you setup all the basic stuff yourself choose your DE / WM file manager etc. you know what's on your system and very rarely do I actually have any problems. With other distros like Xubuntu or Manjaro depending on what DE I choose I alsmost always get odd issues and problems after some time and have no idea what even caused them. With linux simple is best. That being said though, I dualboot and use windows 10 for games and am not planning to upgrade that to 11, if Steam OS continutes to support more niche games I'll probably switch to that and be totally done with Windows.

Linux Mint: pretty good, stable, UI isn't that modern, a good DE that usually just works, should take less resources than Kubuntu
