The anime is an adventure fantasy about going on a journey with friends. A singleplayer game cannot actually deliver that without you seeing the seams and it feeling infantile.

A video game is fundamentally a power fantasy. Ash does not become powerful, he's a scrub in a world that's always bigger and more dangerous than him.

the level of animation, responsiveness, and humanity to the pokemon in the anime can't really be achieved by any extant dev team anyway. Design wise the scope of just the first 10 episodes is crazy. You'd have to have a game with production and writing quality like The Witcher 3, a shockingly big and diverse world, hybridizing extremely wild areas. The tone would be wild since a child on an adventure has the capacity to get lost, real threats from a stalking pair of thieves, hunger, and the elements. Beyond that, no game writers are capable of portraying and delivering in an interesting way an emotional bond with the creatures. Any game would have to foreground its systems for quite a while, which undermines the naturalism and excitement the characters feel in the anime. It isn't something that I think any game dev has ever even come close to when making an open world game. There's really nothing that gets you there as a set of systems without the systems themselves being so front and center you just exploit the creatures or try to indulge in a power fantasy. Palworld's design could in theory enable this, but your goal is to build a big slave army, which goes against the tone and themes of the show.

No one wants to play a video game where you learn the moral lesson of trying hard and being a lover of the world, everyone wants to play games about gaining mastery over the world.

The problem with the games is that they lost their identity.
Look at this character, you immediately see the problem. Her design is far far too busy, her pose and personality is generically new anime and her streamer gimmick isn’t timeless. The series has dated itself in its attempts to become modern.
This shows in the stories of the new games which all end in big climatic anime showdowns yet are paced horrendously with most of the content of the game being spent on “friend” simulator and slice of life. New Pokémon doesn’t feel like an adventure.
The older gen’s had a timeless appeal, kids exploring the wilds alone, new Pokémon only appeals to very young children who are lucky enough to not recognise the anime tropes

They were novel, but being completely honest, no. As Pokemon games they suffer from having the smallest available number of Pokemon on a playthrough, which Colosseum especially suffers from, Gale of Darkness not as much but it's still felt, and they also suffer from most dungeon design being literally just extremely thin rooms that follow a single path. As compared to their JRPG peers of the era, they suffer from very heavy reuse of locations and a relatively simple story.

I say this as someone who liked them as a kid, and who fully intends to play through both again when they get added to Switch Online and will probably like them then too. In fact I'm very excited for them to be added.

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with pokemon's formula, its modern execution is just extremely underwhelming. We're 30 years into it with machines 1000x more powerful yet you'd barely know it if you just played pokemon. At a minimum there was an expectation of fusing the main game with many of the "stadium" aspects (toggle-able of course) with some graphic/style improvements. Not only has that not happened but many other aspects of the game design have fallen off a cliff. They don't even really bother with stuff like dungeons or puzzles anymore. They've also streamlined and hand out so much stuff that it hardly feels like an adventure anymore. You're left with a game that damn near plays itself, requires no real decision making nor commitment (even by pokemon standards), but looks ugly too. It's still fine if you're into comp autism I guess but I don't know how the average person isn't bored out of their minds playing pokemon

He reimagined simple pocket monsters from the first video game as modern mythology for learning and entertainment. He hated Satoshi and how he was forced to write him into every season he worked on. We could've had a series that captured both the wide-eyed wonder of kids as well as the wry reflection of adults. The only time Shudo was given carte blanche was with the script of the first Pokemon movie. We know how it went, but he wanted Ash to die at the end of the movie from old age so they could move on to new characters, the TV studio didn't let him. His big mythological plan involved Lugia as the dual-gendered maternal source behind the existence of Pokemon, the guardian of the sea and coexistence. Dinosaurs, animals and prehistoric Pokemon lived together in coexistence much like how they live with humans. They did go through a mass extinction event, but Pokemon fully replaced the animals as they survived by the help of better suited evolution traits. Every movie following the first would slowly delve deeper into the mysteries of the Pokemon world, by the end it would lead up to a full on revolution to free Pokemon from human exploitation.

Over the years it lost a lot of the soul, but Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket persisted. Once they got rid of them I just lost all interest in the series. As a gen 1 enjoyer I can say that the later gens have good designs sometimes even though I will always be most partial towards the originals. The problem I especially have with later gens is that they so often kept copying design tropes introduced in the very first game rather than strived to do their own thing, to be original.

Take the way legendaries are handled for example. They turned it into tradition for their to be 3 legendaries that pretty much function as a collective trio with one another, then yet another Mew-like that is of course this tiny little floaty thing, then an edgier legendary that is meant to be the cool guy the kids want to catch.

And that just goes for monster designs. Each of these gens after the second gen decided to introduce a new criminal gang that wants global domination and blah blah. Its all the same routine ass shit. None of these games really seemed to strive to be their own unique creation within the IP. I have never played a franchise in my life that stayed so stuck in the same routine formula the way Pokemon did. And Pokemon did it even down to tiring tropes they never wanted to seemingly ditch like the way Legendary monsters are handled as I pointed out.

I have no idea how so many of you stuck with this franchise past the third gens desu.

Doing that would've been a bad idea, The franchise would've turned into Digimon, with its "random bullshit go" approach to practically everything, and just like Digimon, ended up in below average mediocrity. Even modern games still get good reviews and sales because they're all new for kids anyway, and autists find them comforting.

Watching a subbed version of the first season is wild, it's actually fairly entertaining as an adult although Team Rocket gets annoying. (and they even reference how played out they are several times)

I'm surprised how many adult jokes were in there. It all feels like the team behind the anime knew it was a tie-in so they did whatever they felt like doing. Like naming the protagonist after the game's developer, then naming the antagonist after another more successful and famous developer and giving him a car and a club of fangirls.

I also like how all the main characters can serve as either the joker or the serious guy in any given gag. Ash being naive and clownish but also stubborn and earnest, Misty is more serious but also a shallow teenage girl, Brock being the responsible older kid but his brain flies out of his ears when there's a pretty girl, and Pikachu starts off zapping everything but becomes Togepi's babysitter later. Even Team Rocket switches up roles sometimes. In a series with a ton of episodes it's probably a good idea they did that.
