The surface was a massive disappointment, I think. There should have been something that provoked wonder. A distant shape, a light, a sound, a foreign language, or a bug we've never seen before. Instead there was a small ruin, non sentient bugs (which are very common in the games), and a memento. It would've been the perfect time to provoke a sense of awe and scale. Imagine the ruins of a massive machine. Or the body of an old god.
