I think the issue is that Hinako takes too long to get "better in comparison" for most people. Because getting better for her takes multiple playthoughs like a Nier game, and most people don't have the patience in general for a character for bad first impressions now compared to before, if ever. I think the non-subtle writing is intentional to some degree, it's Hinako explaining stuff to an imaginary person (the player, I guess) in a way that aggrandises herself and her own view. And yet, she is in a situation that has been forced on her (which is undoubtedly unjust) and that is multifaceted... I think the ending 4 scenes where she talks to her parents were extremely strong and I cried, I admit.

I really just wish any of this was on display on the first playthrough.

I would argue that one of the game's strong themes is rape, though. Heather is forcibly impregnated by God against her will and the game never shies away from manifesting Heather's thoughts about it. The game is feminist. A piece of art being feminist does not inherently make it bad. It is however not propaganda.
The game is actually about dismantling a lot of nu-feminist ideals. Ironically despite the insistence the game isn't subtle it somehow seems to go under all of these thin skinned pansies radar.
The main character is presented as wrong in most of their beliefs and the core for why they feel that way to begin with is well explored.
In a nutshell the story is about a girl who has developed Oppositional Defiance Disorder from her parent's abusive relationship (and possibly her sister killing herself due to an abusive marriage), and self-loathing towards womanhood because of that and her being ostracized for being a tomboy, going on a hallucinogenic trip that forces her to confront her own flaws and misconceptions.
During the game it is shown that most of Hinako's hangups are trauma related overcompensation, that she doesn't dislike being a woman, that she doesn't dislike being girly and so on.
I mean even her abusive father is developed and show sympathetically and Hinako is held accountable for her part in the abusive dynamic.
The game itself is only above average and the writing good but not some masterpiece. It's crazy to me how obvious it is that people are just reactionary mongoloids who eat up grifter slop and regurgitate it without a second thought.

Hinako isn't against the idea of marriage. She is against being sold off for her parents benefit, having choices being made for her. She considers it better to be unhappy because of her choices than being happy because someone else chose that for her. The game themes should be about women being able to make their own choices and that marriage shouldn't be the only path to happiness.

But what really happens is that her father is a violent, abusive drunkard and her mother a petty bitch that's happy to sell off her daughters to strangers, while never opposing her abusive husband in front of them, only by cooking food he hates and wringing a dirty rag over his tea. Yet Hinako is told that she should listen to the abuser because he's her blood. She eventually forgives her mom and understands where her dad is coming from.

Fox Mask/Kotoyuki settles her father's debts (buys Hinako off) with wealth and influence the fox clan, a patriarchal society, amassed since at least 1880. Hinako (or at least the part of her psyche that considers submitting) is made to cut off her arm, her face and is branded with the fox emblem. Yet Kotoyuki is considered a victim because his clan put a curse on him to start lusting after Hinako.

The game ends with a message that goes against the supposed feminist values, where abusers are to be listened to and forgiven, and where it's okay to be one if you're a sexy handsome fox yokai.

Wether or not the game takes place within her mind past the first ending, the game story is trash, but not because it goes against what some retards here think, but because it utterly fails to properly explore the themes it set up, and finally goes against what's it's supposedly advocating for. And the hilarious thing is, some women will tell you that this game is empowering to women, because they cant see past their thirst for sexy fox man.
