Elden Ring’s 2nd half is even more shit than DS1’s 2nd half but doesn’t even get a fraction of the criticism that game gets.
>Game becomes totally linear once you reach Leyndell unlike DS1 which gives you 4 level paths + DLC you can do in any order
>Mountaintops of the Giants is linear and doesn’t even have a legacy dungeon

Consecrated Snowfield is dogshit since the gimmick is just "follow the light on the ground" and otherwise it's just a normal arean.

Frigid Outskirts is kino because the gimmick is 'fight your way hopelessly through a blizzard assaulted from all sides by powerful, unique enemies until the storm clears and you can see distant landmarks guiding you on your path, which also serve as shelters from the storm to protect you"

The only reason people cry about the outskirts is that it's a boss runback, so you need to redo the whole thing every time you die to the shitty gank boss at the end. Snowfield is just incredibly forgettable because there's nothing to it.

The Consecrated Snowfield blizzard still has actual topography and things to find, and you're not getting constantly attacked by multiple reworked Sanctuary Guardians. That's why it doesn't get the same flack as the Frigid Outskirts.

Hidden areas of ER are way better than the hidden areas of DS1.
DS1 only has
>Great Hollow/Ash Lake, really only has one thing in it

ER has numerous areas not needed to complete the game
>The entire Southern peninsula
>Haligtree
>Lake of Rot to Ainsel Deep Well leading to that area you could only see in Liurnia.

Consecrated is merely a bonus alternate level like Mohg's Dynasty.

I agree that MTOG is a very unpolished area, but Consecrated is actually a good level and over-hated for some autistic reason, the blizzard isn't even that big.

The issue with the Consecrated Snowfields is that there's nothing really to do there other than go to Ordina.
Maybe stop in the Anix tunnel if you need to farm up some Smithing Stones.
Other than that, its just a giant empty space filler. The best thing to find is the reused Lion Misbegotten boss because he inexplicably has a unique boss weapon
You could have dumped the player right into Ordina after taking the second lift and it would have probably been an improvement.

ER had it's issues but I'm playing Sekiro right now and I can't look at this game the same way now. Sekiro (an absolutely amazing game) flopped so now they are just repeating the same shit over and over because the dark souls formula actually sells. Since they don't want to rock the boat too hard they just fuck up the camera on purpose, implement input tracking, delayed attacks and SMOKE BOMB XD types of attacks to make the game "challenging". I finally truly get the rollslop criticism. A lot of the fanbase is autistic (and I don't mean it as an insult) so they can't empathize with people not liking elements of these games and treat being a fan as a core part of their personality so they will defend even objectively shitty parts. It's a fucked up situtation all around. Sad!

It sold well but wasn't as popular as souls. Souls games are also cheaper to make since they reuse a lot of assets (even in 2024 promised consort radahn reused some of sulyvahn's moves) and don't require great creative shifts. Throw in multiplayer and you incentivize pvpfags to buy your game and keep the community alive for longer. They didn't even bother with a DLC for the first time since DeS. It's simply a better ROI to pump out pure-souls formula games, especially when people munch it down like crazy with elden ring being a prime example.

If you systematically clear all content in order of enemy levels, you will run into really garbage copy-pasted dungeons and bosses in the Consecrated Snowfield, but the rest is fine. You want the game to stay challenging when you near the peak of your build, not to become piss easy.

The problem with ER is that it takes the logic of BB to an extreme. In BB you were given a quick dash, limited ammunition to stun a boss, and some interesting combo mix ups to both punish bosses and learn when and where to hit them.
DS3 did this incredibly lazily, and ER specifically builds off of DS3's framework.

In ER you're not only expected to brain-hemorrhage your way through learning most boss movesets, the game seems to be designed completely around just cheesing everything as much as possible because that's what the bosses do to you. Every animation is dishonest, every attack has some kind of unforeseeble follow up, attacks come up in sub-12 frames to fuck with the input delay on the roll, bosses do cartoonish nonsensical shit because they know they're in a game etc.
The path to victor isn't playing it honestly, it's just BTFO with whatever tools you have. I am not going to sit on my ass all day learning a the same shitty boss with a new phase 40 hours in. I am going to rend his asshole open with Bleed, Frost, and Lion's Claw, and when his stance breaks I'm going to pull out a Miseracorde and ram it up his asshole every time. There is zero "honor" in ER, the devs have completely lost their way and they purposefully have made the game to be endured rather than enjoyed.

I like the 2nd half of DS1 because that’s when the whole game opens up and is about the time you can really start focusing your build. Only disappointing thing is lost izalith being shittily done and nito being a pushover. Didn’t care much for the oolacile dlc as that felt like the beginning of where soulslop is today; I still go there to get some stuff but never bother finishing it.

I think the hardest boss in DS3 is easily Friede and none of the others come close. I actually think if I started a run of either DS3 or ER right now, using similar weapons, I’d have a way higher chance of first trying Malenia than Friede despite them being the same archetype. Base DS3 bosses are really easy especially after SOTE.

Reading about people's boss experiences with Souls games is interesting. I finished 3 for the first time this year. I'll add my bit in,
Died to Gael the most, I can partially attribute this to being pretty over the game and wanted it to be done with. Then Midir second, then from there I don't know, maybe Nameless King. Gael was 10-12 deaths, Midir ~8 deaths, Nameless I think 2 or 3 times. Friede I died once to. I did die to the tutorial Gundyr 2 or 3 times too, but I was coming straight from DS2 (first time DS1 > 2 > 3 back to back) and I had momentary whiplash. Most bosses were first try, like Aldrich I was surprised to hear he's supposed to be one of the harder bosses. I liked him, thought he was pretty slow and simple, but does have some pretty dumb melee animations.

Kind-of wish I took my screencaps, but I take very few in any vidya, the ~10 I have for DS3 is more than most games I play anyway.

every fromsoft game has a frontloaded beginning, then falls fast and hard every moment from then on. Firelink shrine is great, you can go anywhere. Then the game turns into a series of corridors with copypasted enemies for you to run around. Getting to limgrave is great, then the game turns into map icon spam open world cumgargling.

I genuinely cannot understand the design of Elden Ring’s combat besides accepting that the game wants you to abuse spirit ashes and cheap items. It’s been 3 years and I can’t see any other explanation for why the enemies just relentlessly fucking spam attacks with no cooldown to the point of bosses cancelling into other animations and reading your inputs.
