How do you play this game? Like actually make meaningful tactical or gameplay choices that are more effective than watching the game play itself. I want to like it but after a few weeks of playing there seems to be absolutely no depth to it? You’re just hard capped by not having a high enough number for whatever content and there’s no way to use skill or strategy to surmount it. I have the double bunny team and helm/mast but fail to see why they’re considered meta? Mostly just starting playing for RE gals and was disappointed to learn Jill is apparently shit tier (not that I really understand why). I just leveled my main squad to 140 and fail to see a compelling reason to keep going and grinding a dozen dupes to level past 160, someone please change my view

I just auto and enjoy the story. At high deficit and later in the story you start facing increasingly cancerous enemies where you have to prioritize certain enemies or they give you tiny windows to kill enemies between their immunity phases. For bosses you have to manually cover for certain attacks and actually pay attention to QTE circles or instantly lose.

But yes in general you really shouldn't play Nikke for some high level gameplay. The minigames are much more enjoyable than the main shooter.

You just play until you hit a plateau with the few SRs that you have 3 limit breaks on, and then you start finding depth in team comps and building up other units for different purposes. Teams for the faction towers, elemental teams, arena teams, boss killers, meme builds etc. Late game development is directing your resources wisely, because you'll never have enough. But the gameplay is mostly auto with you directing specific shots when the AI is being retarded.

Which bunnies are you talking about? Blanc+Noire? They're still good but increasingly powercrept, especially Noire is mediocre. Helm is an ancient unit and awful except with her faforite item she's buffed to top meta relevance but you as a new player are probably months away from building favorite items.

To give you an idea Helm's burst deals 1200% damage, with favorite item it goes to 8200% and this is the least important part of the buffs given by the item.

I find high-level Nikke pretty fun but it's definitely not for everyone. There are some advanced mechanics to learn like i-framing and quickscoping but the latter can get extremely tiring to do for a long period of time.
Certain mob patterns are an extreme pain in the ass to get through and bosses can do a shitton of damage so it can get frustrating.
Stat penalties are quite severe at 30%+ deficits so team-building and gearing becomes very important too.
You can always play it as a side game and farm resources until you can blow thru content. Watch YouTube for later chapter stories if you don't feel like waiting.

The game will just hand you every non-limited unit eventually without too much issue if you play enough. You can affect the odds of the standard banner with the wishlist feature to help you target what you want. The odds are pretty tame for a gacha, still dogshit money grab tier, but you can play around them easier. Save your gold tickets for limited units or you'll feel despair eventually.

for example Jill is very decent, but she's not meta because Cinderella is way above her in terms of gameplay / damage

as for how to play this game
80% of it is just watch how your nikkes kill the raptures, then is just push the campaign, level up, improve your nikkes, see numbers go up, and repeat
there are some levels who require a more "meaningful" approach like delaying your Burst or picking the right nikkes to kill certain mobs (like raptures with elemental shields)
then you have bosses who are almost impossible without certain nikkes...
since you are not in the 160 wall don't worry about those for now

basically, nikke is about seeing the numbers go up and when they don't go up, you wait
if you don't like that...well, no one is forcing you to play it :^)
and don't worry too much about the 160 wall, we're getting our third anniversary soon and they will give you a nice free SSR unit with 3 dupes, and if that's not enough, you wait

Nikke meta is kinda weird to talk about and surprisingly large amount of units are relevant. It's because you can use a variety of units for campaign and then there's completely separate pvp meta. And for raids you need up to 5 teams that ideally match the elemental weakness so in the end game for raids you end up using a huge number of units since you need 25 per raid.

And due to the way the combat power scales you can technically clear the story with any team of horrible units, it'll just take that much longer to increase your combat power while top tier units can progress faster.

I’m just hoarding skill books and equipment mats until I know who’s actually worth spending them on and getting more T9 gear. It seems that dumping them into a few obsolete characters will actually kind of brick your account as the materials require so much grinding. I’ve been following the missions for Alice as it seems like a good way to guide you through the build process, too worried to dump resources into a useless character so nobody else so far. Also don’t want to just be a meta slave and build characters I don’t like so it’s a bit of a conundrum. The "meta" regarding nikkes is extremely dishonest in most cases when used as a catch-all term because some nikkes are absolutely strong and capable in campaign content (where most of a new player's ACTUAL time and focus will be put) while being dogshit primarily in fucking PvP (which is effectively worthless because you will never beat the whales no matter how shiftup likes to randomize servers), and there are nikkes who are utter fucking dogshit even in campaign and PvP but shine really fucking bright in Solo Raid and have a place in Special Interceptions.

Isabel has gained ONE funny interaction with a recent new nikke, but unless more support for her burst comes out she's not worth investing anything into due to how her burst totally fucks with everyone else's. Out of the four Isabel is the one who can end up getting out of the hole with the right supports and a favorite item. I enjoy uma, can't say the same of nikke whereas the gameplay itself doesn't worth imo to do at all to get a mediocre story, which hasn't been quite right since the 2.5 anni. I have no idea why they put that writer in charge who everyone hated, but its very noticeable that the story quality tanked.
The game needs to have substance not just style. The way you people talk about it "it only takes 15 mins, 10 mins, 5 mins" says all that its clearly an activity which is unenjoyable, but necessary evil. Perhaps things will be better at 3rd anni, but I doubt. It really feels like the dev team got too cocky with the 2nd anni.

I enjoy Arknight's story and I think the characters are all pretty great, but I cannot fucking stand playing tower defense games no matter how "solved" and "automatic" it may seem or be. If the main core gameplay element is effectively the opposite of fun and engaging for me, why the fuck am i playing it?

There's going to be a Story Mode to Campaign in the near future, at least, so you'll be able to primarily skip the "dregs of daily chores" to participate in the story in full whenever it comes out. But until then, just stick with Uma if that game is much more your personal speed.
