I've heard shmups are the hardest, densest, most difficult yet rewarding genre out there, but every time I play a shmup it just feels like shit and the "reward" is absolutely nothing even after a 1cc, it feels completely empty and that I wasted my time
What am I missing?

But even if they did play touhou a lot, it's barely a real shmup, it's common to see them eventually try to transition to arcade and get their asses kicked, complain about any design different than bullet hell patterns and resource management simulators, then go back to their fake shit.

When they encounter adversity, most people either give up straight off, or they try their hardest to find a way to avoid it. For them, all that matters is reaching their goal. Some people see said adversity as a personal challenge, and instead of thinking things like 'this is unfair' or 'this is wasting my time', they have a voice telling them not to stop, telling them that they can win. For them, finding a wall that's too high for them to climb, being forced to improve, and then eventually getting over it is it's own reward. I'm not sure exactly why the two groups are the way they are, your problem is that you're clearly one of the first people playing games meant for the second.
