Is Baldur's Gate 3 this generation's Skyrim? Or even bigger than that? How do we gauge its cultural impact and the influence on the RPG genre?

>Is Baldur's Gate 3 this generation's Skyrim?
It's this generation's Mass Effect, actually.
>Or even bigger than that?
Not at all. Something like Zelda is this gen's Skyrim.
>cultural impact
Pretty much none. It's a mediocre RPG with decent dungeon design and romance. Most of its characters are boring archetypes + gay/lesbian tropes thrown in. May as well be Dragon Age 2.
>influence on the RPG genre
Pretty much none. It shows that turn-based, top-down RPGs have a market, and that people like co-op, but Original Sin 1 and 2 already did that. It's why Wasteland 3 and Rogue Trader added co-op. That's pretty much the only influence Larian have had on the industry so far.

>Is Baldur's Gate 3 this generation's Skyrim?
Yes. It's a mostly single player game averaging 50k+ concurrent players 2 years after release. No single player RPG since Skyrim has had that longevity.
>Or even bigger than that?
No, it's not as big, but that's because fantasy RPGs in general are not as culturally relevant as 2011, and Skyrim was a more accessible.
>How do we gauge its cultural impact and the influence on the RPG genre?
It revived interest in the genre. We can gauge exactly how much based on how many games take obvious inspiration from it in the next few years.

I'd argue several things but not that it has the same cultural impact. History doesn't repeat itself, it only stutters.
Skyrim was the beginning of something, the beginning of modern graphics and gameplay, and the beginning of the golden age of the modding community. That's when the players got what they wanted.
BG3 is when the players got what they needed. It's not a revolution or a drastic change, in fact it's just a plain old fucking vanilla game with love and care put into it, and what put a mark on history is that 99% of the competition was half-assed nasty dishonest cashgrabs. Now it's a reference for other reasons, it's a reference for other studios to talk about when they think of the profit they want to make, either by making soulless shit or by putting honest work into it for good community feedback.

GTA 5 is the only game released since Skyrim that compares to its impact. Maybe Elden Ring but only time will tell.
Baldur's Gate 3 is good but not even on the same planet as these games in terms of cultural significance.

It’s been 15 years since Skyrim and I still see frequent memes about it. I don’t think it’ll hit that level, but it’s still obviously beloved in the mainstream and really captured the “got into DnD through critical roll” audience

I think there’s just hard brick wall between people even tangentially into video games and people have completely different, typically outside, hobbies. I’m sure if I asked a bunch of them they wouldn’t know Skyrim either

I don't think so. It's barely moddable, has no emergent content or randomization, and the overwhelming majority of the 6 gorillian people that bought it didn't make it past Act 2. If people are still playing this in 10 years it will be because of scarcity of other CRPGs, not because it has unique longevity.

It's interesting that this conversation is happening. I was actually just talking with a buddy last night about my take on this phenomenon. I do think every generation has a handful of titles that spark a flood of clones, and from there it typically becomes a contest on if the original creators can keep their crown or eventually get upstaged by a competitor that handles it better.

I think Witcher 3 did upstage Skyrim and Bethesda's place in the industry (while not a direct clone and upgrade to Skyrim's design, it did enough of the key components that made Skyrim appealing better than Skyrim and took it's place.) From there you saw a shift of ES clones to Witcher 3 clones. GTA similarly saw an infinite amount of clones, but no one was able to truly upstage Rockstar, and thus GTA remains the dominate force and at this point it seems the rest of the industry agrees that there's no use chasing that crown anymore.

I think it'll still take a bit for more "BG3" clones to really come out, but I think they'll start to come eventually. We're definitely in the early stages of the soulslike clones, it feels like more and more soulslike games are coming out every year, and with the state of Fromsoft I do think it could be possible for someone to possibly outstage them. The competitors are getting better at mimicking the style but I also suspect that people might start to just get grimdark action RPG fatigue (I know my eyes were glazing over when Mortal Shell 2 and Lords of the Fallen 3 were announced.)

The first reply’s comparison to Mass Effect is a lot more apt, but it’s not going to garner as much discussion as Mass Effect did since it won’t have any sequels. None made by Larian, at least.

Did you know the tribal warriors who killed Custer were using lever action repeating rifles? Primitive tribes always adopt modern weapons the instant they are able to do so but often resist other trappings of civilized life like eg modern clothing for a longer time.
