Anyone else feel like modern 3D anime games look too plastic and fake?

Something about them is too clean for me to buy into the characters as people made of flesh, but with older anime games there's enough ambiguity to replicate the effect anime has in 2D

Art directions that are stylized are just more interesting to look at and engage with, jrpg or no. The kotor games and the aurora engine look bette than those gross soulshit Star Wars games for example

Some DQ monsters are a bit too goofy for my tastes but in some places DQ11 had a nice feel to it. I think it would work better if they upped the contrast and stylized the textures just a bit more.

I wish we had got the 3DS version in the West, too. I prefer the pixel art style to the modern one. It's also strange how the 3DS has been hacked for so long, but no one seems to want to fan translate that game into english

I don't know about "too plastic and fake", but I agree that I prefer the older look with the painted textures instead of pretending PBR shading looks good.

The problem with modern graphics overall is the dynamic lighting, everyone looked better when it was all baked, even "retro" indies make the mistake of using dynamic lighting, we have to go back

Dragon Quest games have so much dialogue I'm not surprised no one wants to bother. The fan translation scene has also died down a lot in recent years. Gen Z absolutely does not care to upset the system like that, not without getting paid for it at least.

Just use cell shading. Arcsys and Cyberconnect 2 make 3d modern anime games and they look great

Dynamic lighting is not the issue, F.E.A.R has both baked lighting and dynamic lighting and it's one of the best lit games of all time. The problem is shitty Global Illumination making everything look washed the fuck out.

This is actually why I love the direction DQ7 is taking. They actually look like creepy little Rankin Bass dolls. They look like SOMETHING now. Not this weird awkward look like someone extruded a lumpy plastic model from flat cel shaded hand drawn art.

Nah there's still an air of "budget" or otherwise an air of some caveat-like exception to it. Like the only games that really break into mainstream with that look are Gacha Impact shit. Mainstream single player games with cel shading are indie or JapSlop like Trials of Mana which sell like shit.
