Tried showing TTGL to an old high school friend who has only ever watched battle shonen and this was his biggest complaint. TTGL is heavy-handed with its themes and symbolism, and that should be your biggest consideration while watching. You shouldn't approach it trying to understand the intricate rules of the world or how Spiral Energy works or any kind of powerscaling faggotry, nor should it be read as a mecha anime (as counter-productive as that seems).

The reason I discourage analyzing TTGL from a detail-oriented lens is because the show doesn't take itself seriously and constantly breaks its own rules, which only further serves its theme of outlandish rebelliousness. "Kick reason to the curb" may as well be TTGL's slogan. Spiral Energy is literally a "fuck you, OHKO" power derived from pure willpower. I previously mentioned I don't consider TTGL a mecha anime, and this is why. At least, you certainly don't have to like mecha to enjoy TTGL.

Not from the US so I didn't catch it on AS, but torrenting and watching the JP dub back in 2018 was a unique experience for me. It was during my first year of uni on a Sunday night before classes resumed, and I watched it all in a single, uninterrupted session until 2am in my dimly lit room, illuminated only by my shitty BenQ monitor. Getting through the first episode and hearing Last Dinosaur play for the first time during the next episode preview (accompanied by Haruko's narration) is deeply embedded in my mind. Something about the song (or maybe the context I heard it in) put me in a light, fuzzy, euphoric state, and it's still among my favourite songs of all time.
