The only guaranteed-exclusive series Nintendo has that I used to care about was Pokemon and that was like 20ish years ago. I think the last one I played before I realized I'd had "enough" of it was Pokemon Ruby. I heard Emerald was a fun one, but something in my brain made me feel like I'd gotten all the fun I could out of this franchise. I came back once or twice, mostly with romhacks and weird mods, but I never got the feeling the old games game me so I essentially quit.
Mario, Zelda, Metroid and so on never really interested me much.

Ironically this is how companies fail. There was a pizza place in my town that started as one store. It got successful and started more. It got bought out with big money and opened in other states. It started spending too much on shipping and eventually started closing. Closing wasn’t saving enough money and the entire franchise died.

It's just well-paced management of their IPs and an understanding of their audience.

They have mastered the art of keeping costs low (by not falling for the 8k assets meme) and games coming out regularly enough with recognizable names, to feel like a constant stream while also being just far enough between for nostalgia for "a new Mario/Pokemon/Zelda game" to build up. Even when quality slips the fans will still be there for the next game because the fans know that in a few years there WILL be a next game.

Marketing, Japan's low cost of development and brand recognition handles the rest.

I don't think a large majority of the population are stupid. I think the biggest hit comes from gaming being made too "casual" (which you can ironically enough also blame Nintendo for).
Most people you meet at your job, or at the store or other normalfag hubs that consider themselves "gamers" own 2 consoles, maybe a somewhat okayish gaming PC and have used said combination for 5-8 games (half of which are live services). These are the people who will make game number 9 the newest Pokemon game because their investment (economically and as a hobby) in gaming just isn't that big. It doesn't matter much to them whether the new Pokemon looks good, or plays well or even if it's fun as long as it drowns out the monotony for a while.

And I don't blame them. I have a friend who lives and dies on light-bulbs, has a huge self-made spreadsheet of bulb types, lumen, whiteness, cost, efficiency, power usage and so on and so forth. He has over a thousand entries and constantly updates his sheet multiple times a week and goes through thousands of dollars carefully replacing and examining every bulb in his house (he even has special instruments for it). He's a huge enthusiast and I must come across as a hyper-normalfag for just picking whatever bulb I find at my local supermarket that happens to fit my socket.
My point is you can't live and die on every purchase you make and normalfags don't live and die on what games they buy.

The WiiU also shows that "magical" IPs are not enough to save the company if they release hardware without appeal.
Yes, its IPs are strong, mainly because of the power of the brand (since in terms of gameplay, Nintendo has been falling short for a long time). But strong IPs are not foolproof. Sim City is proof that a strong franchise can fall into disgrace with a single fucking disastrous release.
