How come VR didn't take over the world like we all thought it would? The technology is good. It's affordable(and good flat panels are expensive). You don't need a cable. There's plenty of software. Why do gamers INSIST on playing on flat screens?

HOWEVER, I finally found a fun as fuck vr game I am playing for hours on end, it's Forefront and its in beta or whatever

its literally battlefield but in VR, very fun

yeah you feel like you're falling when you're jumping out of a fucking helicopter, but I like it my brain is like on a roller coaster

personally I didnt give a shit about it was a meme until the quest 3 became like 500 bucks, now I use it daily to watch movies being streamed in bigscreen, or to jerk off to 3d porn (only downside is the file sizes are huge like 15 gb per video in the top quality)

Because every retard company began building their own walled garden ecosystem, possibly excluding Valve who then fucked off just for shits and giggles.

VR should be as close as possible to plug and play just-another-screen type deal to regain traction.

Hell, practically all of the best VR experiences are not "vr experiences" but direct, very functional ports of games that can also be played flat.

Hell, ditch motion controls for now if that's what it takes. I have 400 hours in VR Subnautica with a regular controller, it's my most played VR game by a long shot AND IT'S A SHODDY MODE FOR A REGULAR GAME.

>Took an eternity for the Meta Quest 3 to actually start giving people an affordable option but even then it's a ridiculously high price when you can buy actual consoles for the same price and get actual video games.
>Good VR still requires you to be tethered to a solid computer that would also be good for gaming meaning your entry into the market starts at a minimum of $1000.
>Outside of Beat Saber, Alyx, and Arkham Shadow a lot of the good VR games that don't feel like tech demos normal people would want to play are locked to PSVR1.
>Most VR games feel like tech demos.
>Developers do not want to fund more expensive or higher fidelity games because the market is small.
>Motion sickness is heavily prevalent in the medium and asking someone to spend literal weeks feeling like death before they can actually enjoy the game is an immediate pass by most people.
>It takes weeks to not get headaches after using it for an hour.
It took me over a month before I stopped feeling like I was going to pass out and drenched in sweat and I had to force myself to play the thing for extended periods of time to do this. I still feel like I'm going to pass out if I'm standing and move the wrong way occasionally. I still need a fan on me at all times to not feel like I'm getting the flu after an hour of playtime.

The library still isn’t there yet, and most of the headsets are uncomfortable.

I’m only speaking for myself here, but I also just don’t really enjoy the complete sensory isolation that VR necessitates. I fully appreciate the novelty of being able to physically look around a virtual space and even move around in it to an extent, but it unfortunately doesn’t outweigh how much I dislike being completely cut off from reality. I genuinely just prefer playing games on a screen.

The reason your eyes strain when you have a monitor or phone close to your screen is because your eyes are trying to focus on an image that is mere centimetres from them.
Eyestrain isn't much of an issue for HMDs because the focal point of a HMD's display is dynamic.
Essentially, the image is projected in such a way that your eyes are tricked into focusing on something as if it was really in a physical space in front of you. You're never actually focusing directly on the display itself.

People don't want to strap a machine to their face just for the sake of seeing their monitor in their peripheral vision. Some people are fooled by the illusion, some people get sick from it and some people don't want to feel like they're actually in the game. There's a plethora of people out there and VR isn't good enough to capture the majority of their wallets.

VR suffers from the same problem that everything else suffers. Take modern gaming for example, why would you ever have a PC if you have a phone, and why would you play any game if Roblox exists that have every game. This is just a reduction of variables for convenience. Same goes for economy in general, why would you buy anything in the store if you can just order it online and so on...

Anon, the bulk of the strain when looking at something like a phone close-up comes from your eyes trying to lock onto a focal point that is centimeteres away.

In a headset, the image shown on the display is deformed in such a way that it fools your eyes into thinking that they're looking at something in a 3D space. It's not like holding a phone up to your eyes or anything.

It's vaguely similar to something like pic related and other optical illusions. Unreadable head-on, but when looked at in a specific way (in this case, tilt your screen) it becomes readable.

Motion sickness is developers fault. We have a sense of visual balance that's based on the speed we see things go around us. I might be a more extreme example but I'm pretty sure most people have at least some light imperceptible discomfort and motion sickness that makes them avoid the headset in the long run.

I'm not sure this can actually be solved. It's just genetics. From the very first prototype oculus headset from 2011 to the meta 3 headset from 2023 there is only a very small improvement in motion sickness mitigation. I went from 5 seconds to 30 seconds before puking. This is not even close enough to capture a genuinely global market.

Facebook has been sabotaging the whole thing since they acquired Oculus, even Carmack said that they're "operating at half the efficiency he'd be happy with", which likely means that they were pissing away 99% of their effort on petty office politics.
Valve took it on as a hobby project, but all of their projects fail without someone else doing most of the heavy lifting, which became much more difficult with Facebook poaching everything.
Microsoft contributed less than nothing by sunsetting WMR.
Sony unironically had the best opportunity to deliver on VR with the PSVR2 and the PS5, but they fumbled it and left it to die.

Your video kinda got me into it, I'm about to dive in. Any clues on where to pirate those cute goth avatars?

failure to make VR goggles seem cool, not isolating, not escapism

the best VR advertisements never show the person put on/take off the goggles, never show the person prancing around, alone, in an empty space

the software/hardware is competing with real life. i know some of you have really shitty real lives, and so the current state of VR is appealing. but for most people it's just not there yet.

i suspect the goal is to make real life so crappy for everyone that even shitty VR would be appealing for most people

i wonder what was wrong with drugs, but i guess corps cant datamine an addict's drug induced fever dreams, but VR goggles can atleast record your eye movements and dilations.

virt a mate hub and F95. the UI can be a bit daunting for a beginner at first but it's easy once you figure it out.

>actually it is still flat
>oh yeah? well i have TWO of them strapped to my face
so the real question is, why didn't S3D take off? why did anyone think that replacing kbm with dual-wielded dildos was going to make the difference? why didn't you just wear the unobtrusive lightweight glasses when you had the chance instead of choosing a fucking helmet?

pic is appropriate because everything about VR screams tranny

installing chars and mods is pretty easy now. its 99% just drop the var file into your addon packages folder and you'll be ready. learn how to use cua manager and browserassist asap. the more vars you add the longer load times become. it's not uncommon for vam collections to be 500gb or more

no body developed for it, same problem than the wii, devs want the multiplat money
besides, this is exclusivelly a single user entertainment device, only marketeable to lone hedonist, you canΒ΄t share the experience with friends and family and it isnΒ΄t useful for anything besides gaming

itΒ΄s an expensive toy for manchildren with cash, and lately those are coming in short supply

Would you recommend VAM or VAM2? also what version? Thanks for the tips BTW.

it's very easy to fill up your folder especially if you download fromf f95 since they have collections from creators that can range from 5gb to over 100gb.
>Would you recommend VAM or VAM2? also what version?
vam1 has the most content and is still the preferred platform despite it's flaws with several very active creators the version in f95 should be the latest one but it's easy to update it since the launcher has one built in. vam2 is still in active development but should in theory be superior if it ever gets finished.

no, some people are just fucked up like that with motion sickness.
if a camera moves wrong for a theatre movie they get queasy.
VR requires at best an adjustment period and then shits fine, but only if you have the body or whatever for it.
