Wasted Potential: The AAA Publisher?
Out of all the western AAA gaming companies, Ubisoft is uniquely frustrating in how their games seem to at least have interesting concepts they show off in their trailers, only for the actual games to be typical AAA slop - like all those generic open world tower games they had in the 2010s
>Watch Dogs Legion: funny Bri'ish resistance citizen sandbox
>is actually open world ubislop
>Far Cry 6: Le Cuban revolution jetpack open world
>is actually open world ubislop
Bad AAA games having enticing trailers that aren't representative of the actual game is nothing new, but it's especially noticeable with Ubisoft games. They're like the AAA publisher embodiment of wasted potential.

Ubisoft has a lot of talent that they waste on making generic slop. I'm really mad at how many cool settings and concepts are wasted on Assassin's Creed

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/three-ubisoft-former-execs-found-guilty-of-sexual-and-psychological-harassment-given-suspended-sentences
Former Ubisoft execs Thomas François, Serge Hascoët, and Guillaume Patrux have been given suspended prison sentences for sexual and psychological harassment.

As reported by The Guardian, the trial – which began in June – saw an "overwhelming" amount of evidence of harassment against Ubisoft employees from the three former executives.

During the trial, employees described the company's offices in Montreuil, Paris as being run "with a toxic culture of bullying and sexism".

François, former vice president of editorial and creative services, received a three-year suspended sentence and fined €30,000 for sexual harassment, psychological harassment, and "an attempted sexual assault". He left Ubisoft in August 2020 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Former CCO Hascoët was found guilty of psychological harassment and "complicity in sexual harassment". He was given an 18-month suspended sentence and fined €45,000. Hascoët, who oversaw Ubisoft's editorial team, resigned in July 2020 following a number of accusations.

Former game designer Patrux received a 12-month suspended sentence and fined €10,000 for psychological harassment.

As reported by France24, lawyer for the civil parties affected Maude Beckers described the ruling as "a very good decision today, and for the future".

"For all companies, it means that when there is toxic management, managers must be held accountable and employers can no longer let it slide."

François, Hascoët, and Patrux were arrested by French police in 2023 – along with two other employees – following a year-long investigation. All three former executives denied the charges.

Splinter Cell Double Agent is the exact point where Ubisoft went to shit.
old gen version is great
next gen version is awful
Every single game they made in the HD era was shit outside of the Ubiart game, engine that was supposed to be free for everyone but they realised people would be able to make better games than them and killed it.

Imagine how insanely good an 10 year in development Assassin's Creed game set during the Spanish War of Independence would be from the point of view of a Spanish chad a la Maximus from Gladiator kicking french butts.

Obviously it will not be made because we can't have amazing things.

They would have had my full support/"let's wait and see" up until shadows was(and it is) boring shit made for an agenda and desperation, if they had only done one thing.
Fix Valhallas fucking crashing. But they're so god damn incompetent and egotistical that they just go "lol no its your pc/nvidias fault", despite it crashing FUCKING CONSOLES. Fuck this company I hope the new one burns down and their chinese masters gut them all, literally.

No king rules forever, as we can all see by now.
Game studios can't last 20 fucking years, eventually all the talent that made them the top dogs leaves and is replaced, generally with cheap foreign labor or underqualified new-hires.
Just a sign of the times, shed your tear and move on.

Their deal is that they iterate on concepts without doing drastic changes. You can really see this with Assassin's Creed and how it slowly changes with each game with 3, Unity, and Origins being the "big" leaps in mechanics and general gameplay.

They're also fairly risk averse and outside of Assassin's Creed which comes with the expectation of different locations and content the others try to play it safe because of the sheer amount of money being thrown at them. That's why everything is the same open world design from them as they know it works, it does sell millions, and they seem to have some sort of internal setup to add onto this stuff fairly easily. On their end people are buying them, and they do address criticisms of the formulas which is why like in Assassin's Creed they did a 180 pivot away from Unity when it had the backlash and then Odyssey's gameplay and general structure has been disappearing after its backlash from the fans.

The smaller games they release are where the experimentation is like the Mario Rabbids game or Starlink, but I think the constant flops or underperforming titles on the smaller end like with Steep, Rider's Republic, Rabbids, Starlink, and now PoP are leading them to not really want to take chances and to be honest, I don't think they can really afford to either.

Being mad about this just started a conversation with a friend of mine. This friend pirated AC Valhalla. He has not had a single crash in 160 hours. Told me to check the logs.
The games not crashing. All this time I thought it was buggy, no, this is in fact designed. The games closing itself if ubisoft connect loses connection for literally a split second.
No one on this planet hates this company enough. Holy shit.

What are you guys talking about? I had a whopping two crashes during all of 500+ hours of Valhalla gameplay while in 160 hours of Shadows I've had like ten. The former was on the Xbone X and later SeX, the latter is on the SeX. PC in general has way more issues with Assassin's Creed games including unique bugs tied to it (Origins has broken water visuals that still aren't fixed all these years later despite a next gen patch while Valhalla has audio bugs exclusive to Valhalla PC for like two years). The crashing issue is very likely a PC thing because I had full system hard crashes on my Xbone X with Valhalla, not game crashes.

This is what, 1800? Napoleonic era? Possible DLC in the Spanish colonies, as Spain tries to hold on against independence movements?

Yeah, Ubisoft is too french to make that on it's best day, and current ubisoft is too incompetent.

It's mostly that the insane and incompetent Guillemot family runs the company and treats it like some kind of personal kingdom. Even when they went begging to Tencent to save them, one of their nonnegotiable conditions was 'We're still in charge, even if we sell, and even if we're the reason why the company is in this shitty state.'

Ubi has, at least for 20 years, felt like some kind of elaborate ponzi scheme designed to keep the Guillemots happy and rich while abusing every tax loop hole, regional investment proposal, and hiring scam possible.

The Chinese are also not dumb and it seems like the deal was engineered as 'Ok, you can keep Ubisoft (the company), but all of Ubisoft's valuable IPs go into this new company where we're more in control.' The only people who got well and truly screwed by the Ubi/Tencent deal are Ubi stockholders and the rank and file employees.

That thread was radioactive, holy shit. It’s insane how the mask just slips entirely once the SBI name comes up. Like clockwork, the same execs who said "we're committed to change" turned out to be the ones spearheading the rot. Remember when they tried to frame those "consultants" as background noise? Turns out they were running the whole theater lmao. Ubisoft didn’t just fumble-these people actively sabotaged it for their ego trips.
