Because fanartists would throw a fit if a Pokémon design looked too much like their fakemon OC.
They'd win the potential lawsuit anyways but don't want to have to go through that everytime. They could also pay someone for their fakemon design, or just credit them, but getting associated with some random is a liability, and the dude could still throw a fit online anyways since most SNS artists are unhinged.
Recent leaks showed they wanted a flying type eeveelution but had to be scrapped because the designs they were coming up looked too much like existing fanart.

The idea is cool, I guess, but the execution is really boring and lame. Most of these designs feel that way, it's as if they're designed on purpose to be an underwhelming or displeasing take on a potentially interesting concept.

I don't give a shit about Nintendo. I know a lot of online artists, they all have a flavor of mental illness, and in this day and age everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame. Of course it's generalizing but mostly true, you can't trust most fanartists and megacorps don't like taking even the slightest risk

The great schism clearly happened right after Gen V failed, and they threw out the baby with the bathwater, abandoning the things black and white 1 did right while keeping most of what it did wrong. Now we have PIKACHU EVERYWHERE with too many gay cutscenes, handholdy baby game difficulty that is constantly smuggling game trivializing tech into your backpack, charity OP pokemon, and regions that have no genetic identity due to the games flooding themselves with previous gen Pokémon.
I'm not saying genV was perfect, but frankly, even BW2 was a step backward, I don't want genwunner faggotry padding out the Pokémon roster.

It doesn't matter what the Megas looked like, you'd all piss and cry anyway.
