The deck is subsidized because Valve gets residual money from sales if people buy games on Steam. The Xbox Ally/X handhelds are just rebranded ASUS handhelds that are most likely going to be running Steam games so they're not subsidized and are thus way too expensive for what you get.

I have one. And believe me I expected just the Xbox app UI with some QoL changes like screen record or screenshots. It's not even that.

The biggest issue is when you load it up you need to have an Xbox account to unlock it. Can't install steam os or anything until you do.

Then it UPFRONT has a godamn fullscreen video ad about Xbox gamepass, so you know the different tiers and which one is preferable to pay for.

THEN it takes you to the UI which is all greyed out and looks like games are locked, when you click on one it takes you to the game pass screen.
Purchasing a game? It's hidden underneath the games where you haveto scroll all the way down to see the buy button.

They're trying so hard to get you to pay for gamepass on this device it's crazy. And don't get me started on trying to get steamos on it. I'm still trying to figure it out without breaking the gamepad ( for some reason it registers as d input and the sticks don't work) .

The steam deck was the single worst thing to happen to consoles. It pretty much spelled the death of handhelds, as now laziness is considered acceptable. You can just make a small computer, no need to put in the effort that used to make handhelds special (and cheaper, more effective, and personal). Entertainment companies just can't resist creating niche vacuums. Abandoning entire ventures because they hate money.

You're so naive if you don't realize that there's been a complete homogenization already. So many console/pc games have mobile levels of monetization and gambling and many of those mobile games are just straight up on PC/console.

We're already seeing the 2 merge, Control is getting an iOS port soon too. It's going to be a repeat of how PC and console gaming used to be completely different markets but are now homogenized.

>Why are they releasing Xbox branded PCs now
Because they don't think a handheld xbox would sell enough to ask for a custom chip from amd, it's really that simple.
I think they could do with an snapdragon handheld and at the same time speed up support for arm on windows and gaming, but I don't think qualcomm has the technology necessary to make it either, the only one that would be able is nvidia, and nividia SoCs have consistently been the worst arm chips from every generation they released.

I think they need to either have 2 versions or removable controllers that have different types. You cant have the trackpads and a mass market sized system but you also can't remove them completely for the existing audience who likes them.

The best solution is to just have a steamdeck S controller with switch style controls and then a larger one for autists. A good docking solution would help them become the default entry level PC in a very expensive market. There's no good entry point for children who are desperate for gaming pcs.

China was pioneering the portable gaming PC before valve released anything. Their controllers are cheap and are starting to innovate. Yeah they dont have any gaming company like valve or nintendo who is capable of cultural paradigm shifts but the smaller companies who make hardware are all evolving at a much more rapid pace than anyone in the west. The same thing was happening with phones till the US freaked out and killed Huawei, same thing is currently happening with electric cars.

Nobody cares who is first, they care who gives the highest quality at an affordable price. The gaming space is also stale as fuck and has been operating like china for a while, nintendo releasing a spec bump system is something both MS and sony do and none of it is innovative.

>So is there anything actually wrong with it
The headline is "This is Not an Xbox" and the reason being that "Xbox" is a cohesive integrated experience where you have all your xbox games, other apps, a storefront, friends and the device settings all in a unified controller optimised interface.
But this is a PC running windows with a skin on it so it's a bit of a clusterfuck in the way all windows gaming is. The xbox interface doesn't have all the same features as the xbox, settings are split between the xbox app, the ROG app and the windows settings app. When programs change focus sometimes the thing that has focus is not the game or the interface so you sit there pressing buttons wondering what's going on and only experienced windows gamers will know you need to toggle the alt-tab button to try and get the focus back. You'll probably spend more time in steam than xbox and while that works, it works only as well as big picture on windows usually works which is almost but not 100%. Usual problems of running windows games on a controller interface. There's always going to be slavjank that requires you to press a key or move the mouse which you wouldn't have to do on the xbox version for obvious reasons.
And the final nail in the coffin is that because it runs windows, and full windows 11 at that, it pops up things about onedrive and backup and copilot and all the other 2025 windows hell made worse by not having a m+kb to dismiss it.

So it's not exactly show stoppers for enthusiasts, but for normies who want a handheld xbox experience it falls so short it's laughable.

You're simply too poor to own both a gaming PC and a Switch. I want PlayStation and Xbox gone so games can be made for PC again, I mean the hardware itself, those pieces of shit are holding gaming back. Nintendo doesn't do this, they make games for their hardware don't control third parties like Sony and Microsoft do. One helps gaming, the other two harms gaming.

The Xbox series X can't play 70% of Xbox 360 games. 93% of original xbox games are unplayable. I get Xbox original games but why not 360? People own HUGE collections of 360 games not even years after the Xbox one and the Xbox one is compatible almost fully. This is why Xbox died.

Xbox died a long time ago. Instead of releasing physical, making sure every single game was playable from the 360 era they half assed it, copied Nintendo's greed and went all in with digital gamepass.

Now its destroying them. Luckily I was never a collector or Xbox fanboy so I switched fully to PC in 2008.

Nintendo is making the exact same mistake with key carts and pricing. Its going to bite them later. All these companies have to do is keep releasing physical, keep releasing indie games physical and they'll always have a fanbase.
