It was obvious that she was no good all the way back in Undertale, people were simply blinded by her relentless "perfect caring mother" behaviour towards Frisk at the beginning (which incidentally is also one of the biggest red flags for her being a terrible person).

She could have stopped the whole child murder thing at literally any time - even before it started - by sitting down and helping Asgore through his grief at the death of their son(s), but instead she threw a massive fit and ran away to go be a hermit and left Asgore feeling trapped on a path he really, really doesn't want to go down but can't see any way out of by himself. And all Toriel achieves while out on her noble crusade to protect kids is failure over and over again because she's apparently so petty that she'd rather let kids march to their deaths instead of just going back and talking to her husband.

I strongly disagree because if The Knight is some evil impersonator or possessing/controlling Dess, then that would seriously undermine all of the aspects of Dess's personality and her relationship with Kris that have been conveyed through The Knight. The Knight has to fundamentally BE Dess for the dramatic emotional core of her role in the story to hold. She might be warped and twisted by the darkness into a monster that her mother can't accept, but it still has to be HER. To make another comparison to Undertale, the whole concept of Flowey as Asriel would obviously not be as impactful if Flowey was just pretending to be Asriel, or if Flowey was just some unaccountable force that made Asriel evil. The tragedy of Asriel's character relies on Asriel himself being twisted into a miserable creature and being accountable for that.
