Mint is about as idiot-proof as Linux gets. For some people, it's not enough. OP will try a more advanced distro, break everything, and then go crawling back to Windows. All OP had to do was update his kernel and he would have no issues. Mint has an update manager just for this, it has a GUI and is as simple as it gets. You just run the updater and select the new kernel.

It does just work. You have to update it just like any other OS to get it to work with new hardware. OP thought he could just not update and the OS would magically recognise new hardware, then got frustrated when it didn't.
