Tiberian Sun has the best art and atmosphere but RA2 plays the best. EA killed Westwood because PC gaming seemed on the way out and the entire RTS genre was dragged into a dark alley and raped into submission by the StarCraft and "pro" communities demanding every RTS become an APM/gookclick simulator.

Because EA is evil and greedy, simple as is. Why do you think sold themselves out to the saudis? Because they know gaming is going down the crapper and they never gave a shit about video games in the first place. They're parasites that drained it's host dry and now it's cashing out early

In fairness EA didn't really kill them, they bought the studio and all the assets but the guys who made the studio what it was were just looking to bail once they got their golden parachutes. Westwood was just a logo on an office door before any EA corpo bullshit had a chance to ruin their next game.

The better question is why Westwood sold themselves to EA when they had a bunch of successful releases. The answer is because they blew a bunch on their money on a failed MMO.

I loved red alert and red alert 2 as a kid, and had the first cnc on ps1. When I hit my teens around c&c3 tiberium wars coming out I learned c&c was seen as casualbabby in the rts community by starcraft elitists. I didn't care I love my c&c. Got first decade and played the shit out of generals too. Because I missed tiberian sun I wasn't anal about the scrin of muh ea lore with 3. It was a great game I put a lot of Time into. At the time you could read EA devs on the forums and they really wanted to please fans after Westwood being closed

This effectively means anything and nothing. Nox is mechanically a Diablo-like game but it is carried by its style, music, voice acting, all three classes being fun in their own ways, and just all parts working exceptionally well together. It never became a "Diablo killer" just like every other game retarded journos tried to call that, but no one sane expected that to happen. It is still a very enjoyable game to play. Those who played it in MP also had only positive things to say about that.

>Why was killed

EA tried to do the "corporate downsizing" consolidating all the individual studio into one huge office

it made sense in some ways but the problem is you ended up getting EA tried to get Blockbuster for each of the game rather than having dozen of pretty good games with decent sales numbers in a catalog of a huge amount of diverse games.

Anonymous No.723361462 [Report]
>>723360028
You're right. I remembered that they have the jukebox, but I thought the tracks were changed when fights started. I confused that with the tracks generally being halfway between "combat" and "peaceful" and generally so long that you don't notice it's the same one, plus later missions (starting from around 5) being so filled with combat it might as well be constant, plus factions all having their own sets of tracks that IIRC only partially overlap.

From what I remember of digging in the game's workings the largest change was due to how weapons to warheads worked, but I can't remember the details. It is some strange set up where it is less straightforward than in both RA and TS.
Either way RA's congenial defects like some impacts unavoidably creating splash or attacks on air units damaging things below the the sprite of the air unit (not the shadow) turned out to be impossible to fix without actually putting the binary through a disassembler so I gave up.

They had some hits from the mid 90s and early but by the 00s it was becoming increasing clear that critics and public were getting tired of the same old RTS games. Scores and sales were going and bugs were becoming more apparent from increasing new features. After Renegade flopped EA no longer had a use for them since they could not convert successfully to another genre. Same reason why EA canned Visceral after BF Hardline flopped.
Best games = Their CnC collection.

The only bad thing about the remaster is the AI filtered cutscenes. It has some QoL, but it's still an old game underneath. The first RA is freeware and there's a port of it for modern PCs that is based on the source code release: https://github.com/TheAssemblyArmada/Vanilla-Conquer. It's more faithful to the original than the remaster if you're after that.

Generals had a pretty cult fanbase back then, like you say oldschool fans especially Westwood fans did not like it. I remember thinking it looked rather bland too compared to the stylised 2d graphics. That said with its 2 dlcs it did have a lot of fun to offer when I really gave it a chance. Over time, like with many things, it also gets a shade of rose to be remembered more fondly.
And sure enough, having some controversial elements that wouldn't fly today also makes it intriguing.

Technically speaking, Westwood isn't dead since most of the OG team is still in contact which is how the remaster got made, but EA sure did take a boot to their fingers repeatedly in spite of the fact they were printing out nothing but successes, and then handed off their franchise to a phone game company with virtually zero input on their part, and then acted surprised when C&C died.
What was the logic?

Westwood dug their own grave by constantly trying to do everything at once. Tiberian Sun already near-bankrupted them and would've remained vaporware if EA hadn't come in to nail them out.
