You can't become a critic in a vacuum, you'll just be a dumbass weirdo with a bunch of nonsense opinions. Lifting your takes wholesale from youtubers du jour--that's certainly dishonorable. But that's a reasonable step for people who are seeking a greater critical consciousness. You don't learn how to be critical without exposing yourself to others. There is a soft mental ceiling where a lot of people get stuck at the part where they don't form their own opinions, but of course, most people don't. You wouldn't say this about anything else in the world, by the way, any profession, any hobby, anything. You have to learn somehow. Being annoying and wrong and a thief is just the first step.

It's such a dead show and I hate hearing Alex talk. He seems like an OK guy but he just sucks, man. He sucks intrinsically. I feel the same way when that Turboshawn guy shows up on the Bombcasts. I get that it's a fucking podcast about video games, but holy shit the righteous smarmy fucking NERD(!!!) energy emanating from him is unbearable. I used to dislike Bakalar too but--whatever. He isn't even on the show that much anymore, thank god.
Anyway I don't engage with a lot of the stuff on youtube from either Jeff or GB but I do catch the pods every single week. I've been listening to the Bombcast since 2008, and I've heard every Gerstmann ep since he was cut loose. Mike Minotti kind of disgusts me but I think the Bombcast, overall, is probably the best it has been in a super long time. That era during the East-West split was super brutal. The real tragedy for me is that Jeff has to do it all alone. But despite the amount of crying about games journalists people STILL do here--there's no place to do that job anymore. No more magazines, no more websites. People still mad about a bunch of websites that closed 8 years ago.
Funny to see this thread because I just listened to a 2010 episode of the Bombcast and man it was so funny. Fuck, Ryan Davis.
