CPI is a completely bullshit metric for inflation

Minimum wage 1970: $1.60
Median house 1970: $23,000
Median house current: $420,000

You would have to make $29.5 an hour to match the literal 1970 minimum wage in home purchasing power

Food and other "required" costs of living were much cheaper or absent too.

If you make $15/h you make basically half of LITERAL MINIMUM WAGE in 1970

You could get out of high school in 1970, get any job, even literal minimum wage, and be making equivalent today of $30/h+

Plenty of jobs that required no degree or certifications paid $2.50 which was equivalent of over $50/h today in real purchasing power (not bullshit CPI).

Capitalism is so retarded they think prices going down are bad, they call it "deflation".

I'm not kidding, they WANT 2% inflation a year and think prices going down are bad, capitalism is THAT fucking stupid. Humanity is more complex than a GDP graph and other economic "growth" statistics.

Wives in 1970 didn't have to work

Chart (if it's even real, I'm pretty sure it's not) doesn't take into account single vs. dual income at all

You could buy a house in 1970 on literal $1.60 minimum wage, just your income, and afford a wife and kids.

China has 90% home ownership

Decent housing China costs $25 to $150 a month, or even free

Pic related, China gave people in inner Mongolia these houses for free, $0, look it up

when you got paid in 6 silver quarters you were making $29 an hour in 1970.

now a $15 an hour job is $.80 cents in 1970's money. but you said this and I typed it before I finished reading your post.

Wives still worked in 1970. It's higher now, but women want to work these days. It's giving them more financial independence.

China has 0% home ownership. All the land in China is owned by the government. Chinese "home owners" lease from the government.
