you're aware this is not real-time right? Probably took them an hour of processing on their used 3060 12gb they got from a chinese crypto farm to make this.

Theoretically, would technology like holodecks from Star Trek ever be possible for the average civilian?

Theoretically, if we were to somehow get AI generation speed down to near instant and able to compactly fit/work within a VR headset, this would be possible.
The problem is that the reality of it is insane. The computation alone is nuts to run in a VR setup like that, and getting it near instant is a full on delusion even with the current trajectory of AI generation.

The alternative that is slightly more reasonable but still a LONG ways off would be if 3D asset AI gen actually got good enough to use the 3D spatial mapping in headsets now to build out the "skin" in one longer process then apply it over the area. The issue there would be figuring out the masking so you can have this fully virtual overlay without it covering up live objects you wanted to have in the area like say a can of soda. Anything dynamic in the area becomes a huge pain in this setup.

Seems like some poor people shit feature for when you don't want to see the cockroach-encrusted filth you live in.
If you want to live in a forest buy a potted plant. Either be happy with your mediocrity or fix it, don't hide it to yourself.

You can just buy a vr headset and a treadmill right now.
Disney had a cool thing they made for themeparks, could probably build one yourself for about ~$15000, which is more than consumer-priced + ~6 80 inch displays and a few cameras for eye tracking you'd have a nice little vr box.
Now if you want to fuck something in vr that's a whole other series of problems to fix, and that will take ~100 years for touchable holograms which are mostly just twisting nanographine that dances around your skin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNu6rdxr1bw

Depends on the headset, I just ordered a bigscreen beyond 2 which you can get custom lenses for.
