The PS2 didn't "win" because it was good, it just won solely due to the fact that your parents bought you a cheap DVD player that happened to play Tony Hawk. It was an appliance of a console. Its entire library is a testament to this fact, a complete dumping grounds of shovelware, licensed garbage, and inferior ports designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator who just wanted to see the polygons. It's criminal that this beat the Dreamcast, where REAL INNOVATION was ongoing like online out of the box, VMUs, a library with actual arcade soul—you were being conditioned to accept 20fps cinematic slop as "kino." The Dreamcast would have had to have been a monster in sales to save SEGA, but it was never going to be. SEGA built the Dreamcast to compete with the N64. So, it was already outdated by the time it came out, its controller was terrible, the vmu was a terrible gimmick, and you could pirate the games with ease. Not to mention that SEGA burned all its goodwill away a generation ago. The Dreamcast was always doomed to fail.

The PS2 sold because everyone had a PS1. That's it, that's the extent of the market, the Saturn failed outside of Japan and so the Dreamcast wasn't able to impress enough people, because Sega had been floundering outside of the arcade for the past 5+ years.

That doesn't explain why the PS2 outperformed the GameCube and Xbox. Both of which are because the DVD thing was a huge factor for early adopters. The N64's shortcoming was in sticking with Cartridge media and suffering pretty severely for it on a technical level, and had poor adoption from third parties as a result, and that all carried over to the GameCube, sure, but the GameCube also COULDN'T PLAY DVDs. Its saving grace was in being way cheaper than the other two options for comparable performance, and that was the result of a desperate pivot more than anything else. The PS2 had such strong early adoption that drove such intense third party support, that in turn drove multiple waves of subsequent adoption. It probably wouldn't have happened like that, and the whole generation would have been more competitive if they either all played DVDs, or none of them did. (Except the Xbox. It was released too late for that to matter, and all of their faults were unforced errors.)

The biggest indicator that the DVD aspect was critical to Sony's plan for the PS2 is that they tried to do the exact same thing with Blu-ray on the PS3, but no one cared, A, because it was comically expensive, and B, Blu-ray didn't actually offer anything over DVD, besides higher fidelity. Most people didn't buy their first DVD players for better picture quality at all. They hooked them up to the same old CRTs as their old VCRs, and the real value was in the fact that they were much more compact and you didn't have to rewind them, the future proofing was just a bonus. When Blu-ray came around, most people thought DVD was good enough, and they definitely weren't paying that much for a marginal upgrade in picture quality. So the strategy that worked for the PS2 didn't work for the PS3. If anything, it hampered them and gave the generation to Nintendo and Microsoft instead.

I prefer the tracks in Revenge by a lot. I realize Traffic Checking takes away about half of what a lot of players liked about the game. But I think it does a lot for balance. It essentially reduces the risk and reward of driving in the correct lane, and that usually creates a choice between taking the best racing line and keeping your boost filled.

And it's also just fun as fuck to bounce a traffic car into another player as they're going around a corner.
