I recently tried one of those dirty, evil better aesthetics mods, and it its unironically a much better experience even if you aren't some kind of chud, and I think I've identified what is off-putting about how BG3 is portrayed and, more broadly, what is off-putting about most modern corporate portrayals of fantasy.

The color spray Burger King Kids Club "diversity" you see in most modern fantasy combined with the very modern sensibilities makes everything feel like community theater. You're not being swept away to worlds beyond dreams or dark lands beneath strange moons, you're watching some people's community theater play. Even BG3's biggest fans are primarily fans of the characters and the game's open-endedness and reactivity. I haven't seen any of them claim that they felt like they were taken away to a different world.

I think this partially explains why normies can largely tolerate it. They're mostly okay with the community theater vibe and aren't exactly expecting to be taken away to another world. It also explains why new fantasy properties keep face-planting. Fantasy thrives in whisking people away to realms beyond time, and the community theater thing ruins that and isn't compelling enough on its own, so both fantasy fans and normies stop watching.

What's more, the fantasy haters who make this slop openly approve of the community theater vibe because most of them are your theater kid type anyway, who have nothing but disdain for all genres and settings and only respect themselves and their own artistic ambitions.

I even addressed this in the OP! There are plenty of fans of this game, but they're fans of the characters and the game's reactivity and open-endedness. Even these big fans don't really feel like they're being whisked away to another world, they're just in community theater "fantasy" that has insane reactivity that basically lets you do the story how you want, which is where the praise comes from.

Elder Scrolls lore is really fun to read about but those games take place in impending apocalypse scenarios and the NPCs you meet are just caring about little things in their village. There's a court wizard in Skyrim who used to be a battlemage and was describing the horrors of killing people with magic and I kind of wish there was more of that "consideration" when writing a character.

The mod basically just restores the fantasy feeling of the game world. It puts beards back on dwarves, gets rid of shit like orcs with pink hair, makes more of the NPCs human (in what is supposed to be a human-dominated area) and makes the ethnic makeup closer to what you would expect in the setting. It doesn't even get rid of non-whites entirely, it just has them where you're more likely to expect them instead of this color spray shit.

Do you enjoy the combat in Persona 5 where once you figure out the weak spell, you cast it and twist turns then all out attack and repeat until victory? Or do you think a game like Wasteland 3 where you just take cover and occasionally use some abilities is a better system?

Adding environment factors is a big reason why Larian is ahead in turnbased, another reason is their encounter design high quality.
I don't disagree that for example Divinity has a lot of necrofire surface encounters, which becomes annoying at some points, but compared to your average turnbased rpg this is very mild.

Most people in elder scrolls are so beaten down by every day life that they literally cannot spend the mental effort to care. theres a reason why pretty much every game has a starting town with a mad prophet screaming about completely true, horrific events that are about to pass, and everyone else in the town doesnt give a single shit about him and tells the MC to fuck off if you start interrogating them about the details of what he is saying.

community theatre and larp as a whole are pretty inclusive as performance arts. the circles between world war recreations and fae midsommer orgies dont exactly have direct overlap but when you include things like renn faires and goreans and the various adjacent hobbies in prop making and such they are all pretty well interlinked. the problem with bg3 as fantasy isnt that community theatre is woke, its that larp is inherently low fantasy - a normal person with everyday morality responding to a fantasy situation using modern mores - and baldurs gate is traditionally a high fantasy series - people with fantasy morality and socialization whose value systems are incongruous to modern sensibilities -
