Nioh is only complicated in Way/Dream of the demon and up.
For your first playthrough it's totally fine just slapping on biggest number and not worrying about synergies or optimizing your build.
I honestly think Nioh 1 and 2 have some of the best itemization and progression ever with how forgiving it is on a first run so that less number autistic and more casual players can enjoy the game but it quickly ramps up for the people who actually want to stick around for that kind of thing.

I am a vocal diablo loot piñata hater and somewhat extra disappointed in it in SoP;
HOWEVER
If you just want to finish a run, you’ll have better returns just gitting gud and learning technical skills and mechanics.
The build autism is locked behind ng+ difficulties. Some set and even gear effects and rarity can’t even be dropped before that.
It didn’t work out at all in Rise of the Ronin because of muh open world kind of game loop. It’s fine in Nioh until you get burnt out by it.
I even made to floors 150+ in N2’s endgame palace and I hate this loot system.
Also the game even plays differently, it’s not just a numba go bigga situation, although you start spamming and oneshotting everything because of it.

I've played both, and that is my conclusion. SoP is just more fun to play, more rewarding, has so many different FF jobs, has a party system, has magic, has lots and lots of customisation. The only thing holding it back it's doesn't have any overworld of non-combat areas.

I actually enjoy it more than Nioh 2 but its mostly because of the combat speed. Nioh 2 heavily nerfed movement from Nioh 1 and you cannot obtain 700% speed anymore so even with evade cancels its too slow. Jack's game with Lunatic and Haste boosts your movement and attack animations. This factored in with endgame Rift bosses having crazy movesets make for the funnest action game experience I have ever had but your mileage may vary.

The trick to that mission is to pick Raider (Berserker subclass, Berserk duration refreshes with each hit), pop Berserk and mash. The marlboro will be stunlocked, so even if you're doing 0 DPS it'll eventually break and you can execute it. It'll take a long time at first but as you equip the gear you get it'll get quicker and quicker.
