They're aiming towards a more bland/androgynous character design cause they've been told that's what would sell globally.
When you want to make a product that would sell to as many people as possible, the design progression naturally tends towards making it more and more neutral. Like imagine a graph with two axis, or something like that compass, and a point would show how much something is liked by a group but not by the rest. The idea is removing more and more specific things that pull that design towards a certain direction, so many of these retarded corpos believe that if you eventually reach a point where your design is straight on the point in the middle then ALL the groups will like it.
Of course if you're not braindead you'd think that visual appeal doesn't work like that and that it's impossible to sell to just everyone but the POTENTIAL profit is just too enticing for them not to try. The problem with Nintendo/Gamefreak is that they have too many fanatics that would buy their literal shit so they'll never know if these pathetic designs would actually sell or not in a world where people won't suck their dick.
There are still a few characters that look decent, but say goodbye to the average NPC in the world having an interesting/cute design, and who knows how long until even the rivals and important NPCs will look like that too.
