I like it better than HoMM 2 and 5. But then, I didn't like those as much as many HoMM3 fans liked them to begin with. In terms of overall mechanics it's broadly good; I generally like the unit rosters, skill trees, unit upgrade choices, policy tree, the AI is surprisingly good, etc, etc. And the visuals are "fine".

But the moment-to-moment gameplay feels clunky and slow and unimpactful, whether it's constructing a new building and the town screen looking virtually unchanged, vampires regening (I don't know what HoMM3 sound effect is even supposed to sound like, but it has "oomph", OE feels like just watching a small number go up), recruiting new units or figuring out which town has built which buildings. There's enough friction that I am not so much tempted to press the next turn button. These aren't in the category of issues that are almost certainly not going to be fixed (the art style isn't going to change at this stage of the development, say) so I expect there's to be SOME improvements, but will there be ENOUGH to make it fun to play? I don't know.

Generally it feels like a game made by genuine HoMM3 fans who know what they want and they want good and agreeable things, but aren't very good in the artistry and design side of things.

During the trial, employees described the company's offices in Montreuil, Paris as being run "with a toxic culture of bullying and sexism".

François, former vice president of editorial and creative services, received a three-year suspended sentence and fined €30,000 for sexual harassment, psychological harassment, and "an attempted sexual assault". He left Ubisoft in August 2020 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Former CCO Hascoët was found guilty of psychological harassment and "complicity in sexual harassment". He was given an 18-month suspended sentence and fined €45,000. Hascoët, who oversaw Ubisoft's editorial team, resigned in July 2020 following a number of accusations.

Former game designer Patrux received a 12-month suspended sentence and fined €10,000 for psychological harassment.

As reported by France24, lawyer for the civil parties affected Maude Beckers described the ruling as "a very good decision today, and for the future".

"For all companies, it means that when there is toxic management, managers must be held accountable and employers can no longer let it slide."

François, Hascoët, and Patrux were arrested by French police in 2023 – along with two other employees – following a year-long investigation. All three former executives denied the charges.

Not having some window on mouse hover that shows the name of the building in town or details about the unit you're looking at is definitely annoying.

It's pretty good. Just finished my first scenario as dungeon and started a new one as necropolis. I like most of the changes and additions, though I'm yet to explore them all. So far I just have two complaints. First of all, I feel like the faction unique abilities aren't as game-changing as I would want them to be. Dungeon just has those changing stances, which is ok, but ultimately doesn't really change how you play much. Even necromancy doesn't feel as strong, and you have no real control over the types of units you get, either, so it's just something that kinda happens passively in the background.
And second thing is the music. The faction themes are nice, but the exploration and battle tracks are too mild and generic imo. They just sound very safe. Give me some cool unique melodies instead of that generic fantasy background noise.

I guess this is the gaming in year of our lord 2025. The game can be at best mediocre and people still consider it as 'pretty good'.

aaaand we're done with the latest playthrough. Kept changing factions and increasing difficulty after every win, this one was Schism at 175% difficulty. Some more thoughts:

The easy way would be to have always active passive skills(ranged retaliation), triggered passive skills(Thunderbird lightning strike) and active skills(like unit spells from Homm5, or in this case focus points). I think making every ability cost a focus charge is too much for some minor abilities, they could tweak some abilities to cost X focus points instead, even give you the option to spend more points for extra effect.

Counter Strike and Quake are both FPS yet play very differently. Basic components are the same, but the result isn't. Modern AoW is much closer to Civilization. Emphasis on micromanaging city and resources, tech tree, granular unit upgrades, etc.

Very much debatable. What they have in OE didn't take much work at all. Very basic windows and buttons. Most importantly they clearly didn't put a lot of thought it in it in the first place. Button placement and menu design is quite inefficient.
It's clearly felt with Magic Book. Someone had an idea of a book rising up and opening up all majestic like. Turns out it's a thing you need to interact with all the time. So they've slapped the skip animation in options, because every playtester and developer got annoyed with it, while interacting with the game. But clearly not enough to tell UI/UX designer "too bad, fuck off" and remove it completely.

i tried it yesterday. it was extremely boring. it was a giant mistake to put the skip button front and center like they have done. it's front and center and is a giant icon and is unmissable. it encourages skipping all the monsters to an extreme degree. that you can now see precisely how overpowered you are compared to the mobs, just makes it even easier to choose to skip them. i don't remember exactly how combat worked in homm3, but i do remember it being vastly better and more fun and overall satisfying than in this one. in the random map i played, i skipped basically 98 percent of all the mobs. fighting the ai heroes became a giant chore, because i had gotten so used to just rushing through everything and skipping everything. and in a homm game, where fighting is 90 percent of the entire experience, that's a really bad sign...

As I said, those PvP strats revolve around pushing through to higher PvE challenges sooner to gain an edge on the opponent. Which is ironically the main driver for manual battling, since taking difficult fights early on before the auto resolve can help you out requires it.
All that is mostly related to things like buying spells, which is more controlled by what the actual maps or map templates offer at the start, and not so much a game mechanics balancing issue.

i played the demo and i enjoyed it, and it felt very substantial with all buidings and unit tiers available. so what's missing from the full version? also is paul romero's music in the demo or is that coming later?

Yeah it feels a bit zergrushy but not so big that it becomes the only trait about them.

I think my biggest annoyance was how it's impossible to make use of the extra friendly summons on the map each week because they come at base version instead of upgraded and you only get your 7 slots in a team on the map.
Needs a passive reserve line you don't use in battle but can be used as unit inventory.
Or just straight up send them to the castle or upgrade there if you can idk.

The demo only has crummy random generated pvp template maps. The full version will have a campaign and hopefully also proper scenarios. Elf and bug towns are also missing from the demo.

That's true, I just use town portal first, so I don't have to worry about slots and upgrades. I think it would be nice if they brought back HoMM 4/5 caravans. Either that, or maybe allow you to upgrade the external dwellings like in WoG.

People being so indulging to 5 will always be a mystery to me. It gets anti-magic and armageddon. Thick hide and wean are really good spells to have. The ice spells also lower the targets initiative and cave in blocks most creatures from moving for a turn.

I played Schism when I tried that map, and there was a T7 dwelling close to my main castle, so I got that early, got the "build from dwelling" building in every castle, it doesn't actually care if the dwelling has any population in it to recruit from at the moment, it just gives you what is effectively an extra recruitment building in every town. As the final battle approached, I town portaled around my various towns and picked up T7 units from them. I had 29 Abyssals at the final battle, it was not a difficult fight.

There is a typical human knight faction in every game, but that's it. Most factions are made up of various monsters and mythological creatures. Only ever touching one faction sounds like it would get boring desu.

When HoMM2 and HoMM3 released, they were okay. I had fun for a few hours, and a few weekends with friends. Anyone still playing the series is fucking broken. It's the slavic equivilent of Total War.
