Inventory discussion thread
What's is /v/'s favourite kind of inventory system in games?

For me, it's a list with weight limits, ala skyrim and fallout.

Infinite inventory space with meaningless stuff like weight when the game doesn't track weight and lore when the game world doesn't make sense.

This is true. Unless you're a student you should definitely be carrying a brief case, or have your own office where you can keep all your work-related things.

i really liked death stranding's approach to inventory, but i figure most games would suffer from implementing it as is.

Desu I don't care much for list systems. It's annoying to essentially pause the game to scroll through a long list to find a single consumable, so I end ignoring them most of the time. I honestly think that smaller, tighter systems are better.

I love pretty much every RE inventory system. RE4 cache is obviously the best but the RE7 inventory is nice too. It's a good middle ground between the classic RE inventories with a pretty limited number of slots and the RE4 cache system with a huge number of slots and every item takes up at least two. It also is immersive and the most interesting thing about it compared to every single other inventory system in Resident Evil games is that it does NOT pause when you use it. This can lead to some pretty thrilling situations in the game. I'd almost say I prefer it to the RE4 cache case, maybe I do actually. But visually, the design is less soulful than most RE inventories, although it does do a great job of keeping you immersed.

Seconding this
Re4 Cache system with upgradeable briefcases and the unlockable attachments, it somehow made inventory management actually FUN, it adds a touch of realism (Sort of) and looks really well presented especially in the remake

I want an item management system that’s connected to your equipment. The more damage your equipment takes, the more likely you drop the item with every step you take.
Some of th best moment of Stalker Gamma is when I load in a magazine and it turns out to be empty and I die because of my mistake. I want this to be extended to my items as well.

Disaster Report had a cool 3D version of tetris inventory. I think certain tools and stuff could hang outside the backpack or sit in a side pocket too. I don't know of any other games that do that.

Now that you point it out, most of my peers (and me) wear backpacks when going to work, no matter if they have a car or whatever. I just like having some storage space just in case.

You WILL live in a suburbia.
You WILL drive 20km to the closest Walmart.
You WILL buy 50kg worth of "food" (full of preservatives) for the next month because it's annoying to drive that far.
You WILL buy 30 plastic bags to carry all that.
