Dark Souls 3 was basically made in that very same time. I would have preferred an Elden Ring spin-off at that point, closed world like Demon's Souls.

Shadowkeep is actually very small in terms of actual design. It just has a lot of spacious, empty linear corridors, especially in the specimen storage section. But by far the worst part is the pseudo-new londo, that shit straight up feels unfinished, like it was done by pajeets.
Side dungeons are indeed vastly superior, probably had one of Fromsoft oldfags behind their design.

The Specimen Storehouse is Giga kino, I love precarious towers with confusing passageways. The only thing that sucked about the flooded area was that the monster underwater was just an Erdtree spirit, should have made a unique monster or hell have the hippo there instead of at the entrance.

The Skibbidis were a good idea.
The issue was that there were only exactly as many in the game as you'd need to fully level. And if you missed one, you couldn't max out your blessing.
I know the later levels weren't strictly worth the scavenger hunt for, but the solution was more obviously that they should have put many more fragments than were necessary so that you only needed a majority of them to max out your blessing.

The Lore was good. Actually coherent for once and condensed down.

The Shadow Keep has great enemies in it, and you get spat out on a bunch of difference places so it feels like a true hub fortress, unlike the Research Hall.

You're an extremely gay motherfucker. Research Hall contained a unique and handcrafted selection of enemies, it was the most atmospheric level since Latria and in terms of level design it's probably their best iteration of a vertical dungeon, with a supercharged version of anal rodeo spiral stairs. Shadowkeep has like 2 enemy types unique to that place, a billion of copypasted shadow hollows, bats and messmer soldiers, no interesting level design to speak of and extremely bland atmosphere.

No, it was the same delayed attack pattern memorization shit fest from start to finish. Absolutely nothing interesting to talk about.

Belurat and Enir are a literal linear hallway with so many sites of grace it's impossible to feel challenged. Shadow Keep was their ambitious attempt to integrate open world into dungeon progression, but it came at the expense of dungeon design and detalization, basically all individual Shadow Keep level fragments are undercooked and lack any intricacy.

The bosses being straight combat encounters is what makes them good.
There's no bullshit or trickery or gimmicks getting in the way of you and some ancient hero going to town on each other. Even the dragon fight was actually good for once, because Bayle let you hit his head instead of making you wack his ankles all night.

Being linear isn't a flaw, when the path it takes you up and down is very entertaining.
Anor Londo is almost totally linear and its great. Same with Lothric. In fact, the vast majority of Souls dungeons are basically linear when you're inside them.
Also, the hidden parkour path through Enir Ilim to get the Euporia is probably the best Easter Egg puzzle From has done so far.

The Shadow Keep is worth more than the sum of its parts.
Between having different entrances, different exits, and the great verticality, it comes together to be worth more than if it was just focused on only leading to Messmer alone. Instead it feels like an axis that the world rotates around and a fortress placed exactly where it should be to rule the landscape.

Not quite, it's more like you get to the middle of crystal cave and a teleport takes you down to Seathe's boss chamber. Volcano Manor is a full dungeon with lots of secret areas and alternate paths but a really goofy entrance to the boss.

Just doing all the main dungeons and most of the content in the main regions is going to take you probably a triple digit number of hours on your first go at the game.
You could spend all day in the Haligtree alone. Same goes for Leyndell, and farther if you head down into the Shunning Grounds. Easily an entire evening in Nokron or Nokstella and their respective rivers, apiece. Farum Azula is another that will take you all day on your first go.

You can pretend that the game is somehow empty, but there are many dungeons that are long and challenging enough to really take a while to bang through.

Yes it is. Volcano manor is fucking tiny. It's a straight hallway with two extremely short side dead ends. The post-godskin part just awkwardly ends after A SINGLE HALLWAY AND A ROOM. This is fucking embarrassing and not in any way comparable to the Archives that have 3 distinct biomes with a shitload of verticality and secrets. Prison area alone has more to explore than anything you'd find in side passages of the volcano manor, and that includes the lame one way vertical drop.

The combat is special because it is one of the few 3D action game combat systems that is actually fun and not either button mashing combo autism or trying to be Oblivion.
What made the combat good is that it was fun to do. Even against basic enemies, the weight and mass of your avatar feels right so everything it does is also satisfying. Elden Ring has built on this even more with the Ashes system that lets you really dial in your style of play, making this even more fun.

Bosses that people actually like from Demons Souls or Dark Souls are bosses that are straight combat tests. Not the dumb gimmick fights.
Changing that working formula for boss fights is retarded. This is why no one thinks the fucking Armored Spider is a good boss or thinks that the Capra Demon gank is a good boss. This is why people love Allant or Gywn or Artorius.

It was designed for a new experimental 3D ARPG game by a director with experience working on the free flowing and speedy Armored Core series, who was working with people that spent their careers designing the slow and plodding Kings Field and they found a middle ground.
DeS combat was miles more advanced and dynamic than anything from previous FromSoft dungeon crawlers and also was very different from the more common hack and slash melee combat systems used at the time.

The combat is good in a vacuum. Shove the player in a white void with batches of enemies scattered around, and most players will actually have fun with it. Because on a moment to moment basis, the combat system is very engaging.
The level design enhances this, and FromSoft has maintained definite talent at that aspect through to Shadow of the Erdtree. But it is only the gilding atop a lily.

the world design/exploration was 10/10 but it had some of the weakest ER bosses. just lots of cheap obnoxious annoying bullshit, lots of really hacky attacks like Gaius and Metyr having hitboxes that are larger than their models can actually reach so their models abnormally stretch every other physical attack lol. this game's version of Radahan in particular is embarrassingly bad, like i think a Dark Souls modder who makes custom bosses would be embarrassed to have something so cheap in their game.

i'd rate it higher than the base game if you could replace the bosses with ones from the base game that aren't as bad.

Radahn's bow is his most dangerous weapon and while you're fucking around with summoning all the jobbers, you're way more likely to catch an arrow that wipes out 75% of your health bar.
I think they're intentionally nerfed on damage in that fight, because the summons barely tickle his balls, when Radahn doesn't actually have that much HP. Instead it just makes him way less predictable because he switches targets wildly.

The base game is pretty shitty to holy but all the bosses you're complaining about are either neutral or weak to holy. Rellana is slightly weak to holy (only 20% resistance, lower than fire/magic but higher than lightning). Messmer is neutral to holy in his first phase and weak to it in his second phase. Radahn is weak to holy in his first phase and neutral to it in his second phase.

In fact, there isn't a single boss in the entire DLC who has holy damage as their most resisted element. It's either the same as another element (neutral) or lower than another element (weakness).
