I had a friend who got really high on some drug (I don't remember what) one time and he literally begged me to stop the car every 30 seconds to smoke
I stopped obliging after the first three times and he whined about it all the way home (40 minutes)
I fucking hate drugs so much

Tobacco addiction has to be like the most retarded money sink one could get into. Like, there isn't even a reason to start, it's completely self inflicted out of your own free will. I can understand not being able stop once you are hooked but why the fuck would you even start? You are literally paying a premium to get cancer, at least alcohol makes you feel and act funny.

I know it's become a joke thanks to all the retarded out of touch youth PSAs about it but unironically it's often because of peer pressure that people start smoking.
The others are just the same reasons any shit addiction starts, bad home, trying any vice out there to numb mental pain, etc.

Do people really pressure others to smoke? That seems alien to me, like every time someone has offered a cig to me I just tell them I don't smoke and that's it, never had someone get pushy about it.

No, this isn't true at all. Maybe it was 50 or 40 years ago, but most young people nowdays start smoking out of stress from studying or pursuing a career. It's a stress relief. I'm a NEET so I don't need that but I started vaping because I like the slight dopamine boost + it enhances booze to levels I wasn't even aware of.

Start vaping, it gives you the fix but it's less addictive and doesn't taste as good. A couple of month later you can just quit vaping, it's much easier than quitting smoking

I didn't say it had to be significant mental pain or a legitimately terrible situation.
Youth tend to have a somewhat narrow/insular worldview where the NOW is most important, which is why a minor social faux pas causes some to have a mental breakdown. Or in this case, test anxiety causes them to pursue smoking/vaping.

I guess you are right even though young people seem to be smoking less and less each generation. Guess the goverment making the life of smokers harder is working.

Nicotine is a dopamine booster. Alcohol is a depressant but if you're in a cheerful mood it also helps pump up dopamine, resulting in a dopamine rush where you feel king of the world, like you're invincible. I have a theory it makes the buzz come faster, like you get drunk faster if you intake nicotine. 9-10 beers suddenly feel like 12. I think I end up drinking less when vaping because I feel satisfied quickier.

Vaping was huge as an alternative (less expensive, doesn't stink, less regulated at the time) for quite some time until the whole popcorn lung factor came to light.
