As an orphaned teenager she was adopted by a famous detective. Wishing to pay him back she took a part time job with a shady organization studying sleep; all she had to do was take a nap and she'd be paid after she woke up. But while she was asleep the organization outfitted her with a spy suit that lets her holographically disguise herself, called her Essentia, and used her to commit crimes around the city.
Eventually her detective dad caught on to the source of the crime spree and arrested the leader of the criminal organization, a man who also began to think of Emma as his own daughter too. The man gave Emma the suit and his Pokemon team for her own use, and the detective bequeathed his agency to Emma, and both the detective and the criminal left Kalos, never to return.
And so Emma, inheriting a powerful Pokemon team, a superspy suit, and a prestigious detective agency from her two adoptive fathers, became the best detective in Lumiose City.
