They're fine.
I used several as my primary machines for years.
If you CAN get a desktop, they're better price to performance ratio, generally.
They're more sensitive to ambient temperatures and you're likely to be closer to it meaning the fans will be loud as well.
It's a little bulky to use as, say, a work laptop because of the big charger and generally increased heft.
They tend to have shorter lifespans than PCs and that's before considering any swappable components. It will be good for 3-5 years vs a desktops 5-7 average.
Gotta keep an eye on thermal paste too or you will melt some of the interior.
But yeah, it's fine. I have 3070 laptop that sees little use these days but it's a capable enough machine.

Depends, obviously if you can you should build a PC, if space is a concern you can make a small form factor mini ITX build. Gaymen laptops have gotten pretty decent in these past 10 years, cooling is better, performance is better and DLSS picks up the slack.

I'd say if you travel alot or live in conditions where you have no privacy a gaming laptop will cover all your needs as long as you do some research before buying. There are decent computers in both under $1000 segment and over $2000 segment and there are also shit laptops with dogshit everything that cost $4000.

Only if you're moving so frequently that setting up even a miniITX build becomes too much of a hassle or you're struggling hard for space or you're too retarded to build a smol computer on your own.
There could be another more niche use case. When I was a small kid I paid 50% for the cost of a gaming laptop with the understanding that I had to share it with my father (the other 50%) and my then-toddler brother. Sharing a laptop around is much easier than moving an entire PC around the office and other rooms etc.

No shit. It never made sense to go with the highest end GPUs models in laptops anyway, gaymen laptops are only somehow competitively priced when going for the XX60 and XX70 variants because either way you're gonna have to do some compromises when playing games.

Physics work against gaming laptops.
Games require lots of compute, that means heat, heat that goes into small not very well ventilated spaces. Is also means it needs relative high power, which drains a battery, so you are not 'that' portable. Performance on 'mobile GPU' is also a marketing scam, a mobile RTX 5070 does NOT equal a desktop RTX 5070. Look up some benchmarks...
So, I would NOT recommend it if you're just thinking: "sweet a screen and computer in one!"
Performance to price ratio you're worse off with a laptop, even considering the monitor. The price you pay for being portable.
So that is the only reason to consider it, to be portable. But then, I'd go Switch or Steam deck, not gaming laptop.

Personally I would not go for it. I would buy an APU laptop. because you compromise the entire build for that dedicated GPU chip. I'm looking at an Asus 16" OLED Ryzen AI 300. Perfect size, future proof CPU, better battery life, it can still play indies.

Gaming laptops are a perfectly fine compromise solution for people who can't buy a proper desktop PC for whatever reason (space, constantly moving, etc). Just be aware that what you're buying is effectively a movable desktop with less power and a weird form factor. You can't do any real gaming "on the go" because in order for the GPU to get sufficient power you have to connnect your laptop to a wall socket - the battery does not output enough juice.

I have to switch between two cities weekly due to work and I've been using a gaming lappy because I can take it with me. It's fine.

Gaming laptops are great if you need portability and you have realistic expectations. Try to get advice from experts on forums and don't aim for the top end and you will have a good time. If you play older games, if you like indies, if you don't want to play modern AAA or want to emulate even a low end dedicated GPU can suit your needs. If you expect too much, if you don't do your research you will probably have a bad time. There are various things to consider from price, weight, cooling and performance.
I don't really understand the haters, you clearly have to pay for portability but that is how things work. A desktop is sure cheaper, better, upgradeable etc. BUT when you need portability for any reason it doesn't matter. Also yeah the modern GPUs in laptops are baby shit compared to desktops but they still play like... 99% of games ever released?...
A damn 2050 mobile plays Hades 2 in 144fps and pretty much every emulator while not sound like a jet engine. If you can get something like 4060 with a decent cooling and good TDP you can play almost everything.

>i live in the middle of america, in a rich ass hoity toity ass white town
That srsly doesn't stop you from having third world power lines & brown-outs.
That shit was already a politico topic under fucking Bush. And nobody did very much about it since then, everyone was too busy assigning bathrooms.
If I was murican I would get some fucking solarpanels. Not because I give any shit about climate but because its a useful excuse to have some power buffering that can even make you money back

1440p yes. 4k probably not. if you're a graphics autist, then a gaming desktop makes sense but most people don't really benefit from 1440p -> 4k upgrade as much as they benefit from portability

I'm happy with my 4060 Acer Nitro I bought for $800 in 2023. A couple times this year I've thought about putting together a "serious" desktop rig when the 5070 Ti dropped below MSRP but then I stop to take account of what exactly I'd play on it I can't already play on my laptop, can't think of anything and just drop the money into ETFs and gold. Same thing whenever I think of getting a new car, new watch, etc

The AI Max+ 395 specifically is a direct contender with the desktop 4060 and mobile 4070. The one lower binned SKU might still trade blows, but no older gen chip is anywhere remotely near that level of performance.

I think an RTX 4060 is a great choice and perfectly serviceable for most things. You can also find some of these around $950 to $1100 depending on how they're outfitted. The Ryzen AI Max chips are in systems selling for way more than that, like $1700 to $2000.

I'm posting from a 4060 laptop for what its worth. I like mine. Dell G15.

Got one for work because there's a bit of down time here and there. Don't expect much. A 4060 mobile card is decent and runs most things but it's the ram and cpu where they will fuck you 99% of the time on laptops. If you're cool with playing chill older stuff or card game shit like tft andhearthstone then it's fine.
