Because You are fighting Tyrannids which naturally leads to horde mode esque encounters. Bug enemies in shooters tend to lead to that. You can’t have a lot of mission variety when you are fighting enemies that rely on overwhelming swarm tactics. That’s also why the first game is better Orkz are fundamentally more flexible/funnier enemies to fight due to the different scenarios you can cook up for them.

so why are you still constantly defending shit in the second half when you're almost exclusively fighting chaos and the nids are nowhere to be found?

I hate games like this and Helldivers2 that use all kinds of visual trickery to sell "WHOA BIG BATTLES!!!!"
EDF consistently has more actual shit on screen that isn't just an animated skybox/scripted bullshit to fool players into thinking they're killing thousands of aliens

This. Game at release was worst than a shitty early access. 4h campaign, 5 maps, $70 ($80 3 days early access). It's not even worth pirating it.
People have no respect for their money anymore.

I've had games of SM2 where the end kill counts combined was at least 1000+. Harder difficulties definitly end with about 300 kills per player every game. Sometimes the AI directors gets spicy and adds way more and you can end up with everyone having 400-500 kills.
