Why did VR gaming fail?

Devs refuse to give gamers what they want this gen. They're to worried about retaining the identity of their tech demo...

Because VR didn't just stagnate, it took a step back. 10 years ago every $600 headset you could buy was OLED and had perfect blacks while modern trash peddles horrible LCDs to your that look horrible in dark scenes if you aren't willing to spend $2k.
Besides that, nothing changed. The controllers are cheap and none of the meme tech that people hyped up 10 years ago ever became adopted.

>every game is either the exact same formulaic sandbox, job simulator, or FPS game, or a lame port/VR mode of a popular game
>quite pricy with somewhat steep requirements
>despite all of this, consumer VR tech advances at a snail's pace, only being somewhat better than it was a decade ago
There's your reasons.

The last high-profile VR game to release was Alien Rogue Incursion last December, and I didn’t realize until well after the fact that Zoe fucking Quinn was the narrative lead.

This thing is the natural home for light gun/on-rails shooters, but nobody’s taking advantage of that, instead obsessed with making a bunch of awkward FPS games that never really feel good to play.

There should be House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, RE Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles, and shit like that on there, and they could probably be made on a shoestring budget.

I would also drop kick my mother for some form of Burnout and/or Twisted Metal in VR that could be played with a steering wheel.

Still, PSVR2 was worth it for RE Village, RE4, and Switchback alone.

There's no full games aside Alix. Rest feels like tech demos.
Most of those requires full movement. A Mech game where you play in the chair can work so fine.

Last good VR game I played was a lightgun game in Vegas.
Something about zombies destroying the city and rolling down the strip shooting at them.
It's a bit baffling that there aren't more on rails shooters like that for VR.

Oh, also
Everyone has realized that VR is really just a peripheral that functions in an extremely small ecosystem, like HOTAS or fight sticks. But unlike other peripherals, VR setups are MANDATORY (sometimes specific ones too) for their games, and most of their games aren't very good, either.

You probably won't see any further adoption of VR until the tech becomes more affordable and/or more immersive.

It hasn't really failed since consumer VR is here to stay, it's just that most of the companies developing it are super retarded and are actively hurting the industry.
Meta is sponging up funding, interest and manpower while actively pissing away most of its effort.
SteamVR is basically a hobby project.
PSVR has no drive or vision and is content to deliver basically nothing and die twice over even while it was in a good position to incentivize the creation of more official VR mods to their games beyond just the RE games.
Microsoft just recently killed its own VR service and bricked its headsets on new Windows versions.
The vast majority of the other headsets are just niche or chinkshit.

UEVR at least shows that a lot of modern games could easily be made VR compatible without being dedicated VR games.

Gamedevs cannot even optimize their releases and AAA companies are bloated out the ass paying DEI hires and friends. Its simply too hard for them to open a level editor for VR or to design a decent game for it. Only Valve can pull it off.

nope, even then you wont see widespread adoption, because that isn't the issue
the issue is the "games" are shit and EVERYTHING, from the required shitty heavy bulky peripherals and the nigger tier "games" to all the space you have to sequester for it, are massively fucking overpriced (and for 0 value at that)

>starting to get actually good by 2018, but crypto boom makes vr too expensive (and now samsung pushes their phone-based headset in every store and makes everyone dismiss vr again)
>starting to get really good in 2020, but covid made everyone broke
>really fucking good in 2023, but ai jacked the prices further and seemingly forever
>minor blunders along the way, like faceberg buying oculus, sony not making psvr2 backwards compatible, everyone trying to make their own vr ecosystem and bite a piece of an already tiny market, not letting it develop
>loud and requires space, so many people can't afford it even if they can afford the hardware
>mostly associated with vrchat creeps

Immersion from the wider view of the headset is ultimately a minor gain, and the head tracking and hand tracking has only been used for Wii tier gameplay. There is no company in the world that would ever commit the resources necessary to create the truly impressive VR gameplay that's been imagined in other media.
