It's crazy that they got all this free marketing and goodwill and it still flopped massively. They even had that tournament with a development build, I actually tuned in and watched and it was hilariously unbalanced, the angel race just spammed one unit and won every game. That's about when I checked out I think, saying this as a big BW fan. seeing the game actually get played made me go
>oooh so it's starcraft 2 with creeps
and I lost interest pretty quick
The whole project was predicated on the idea that SC2 is a good game and personally I just don't think it is, but all the assumptions of the project flowed from that
>these ex-blizzard devs will surely make a good game
...because they made SC2 and that was good, right?
>it's important to invest in pathfinding and make sure big deathballs can move fluidly
...because SC2 has good pathfinding and its deathball combat is what people want, right?
>we can split the campaign into parts and sell it piecemeal and players will eat it up, with cosmetics and other bullshit on top
...because SC2 did that
>the esports scene will be huge
...because SC2 gets high budget tournaments, I guess?
etc. etc.
They wanted to make SC2: 2, but failed in pretty much every way. they didn't have the brand, they didn't have the team, they didn't have the talent or experience, they squandered their comparatively limited funding. And even if they DID succeed, the game still would've probably flopped because SC2 isn't even that good.
