It's funny how there's only 3 kinds of RTS you can make, sci-fi, historical and fantasy, best represented by Starcraft, Age of Empires and Warcraft respectively and they went ahead and copied the one Blizzard game that's still alive. If they had copied Warcraft they could have at least capitalized on Reforged being a flop and taken its players away, though considering this look exactly like Reforged it was probably hopeless from the start.

the bug people who care for competitive RTS usually don't care about any of that as long as it is "readable", but of course at this point anyone into competitive RTS is a nostalgia fag for 20+ year old blizzard games who can't be torn away from those games.

The "community" was very vocal about their displeasure with the game, particularly the graphics, throughout the entirety of the beta, and the devs kept doubling down until they were forced to change it at the last minute. I love RTS games and I'm still hopeful that one day we'll see a resurgence of the genre, but Stormgate was not it and it deserved to flop.

Remember watching the gameplay idea on alpha and thought "that shit is gonna flop"
They did surveys and told them it was gonna flop. SC and WC play like dog shit for normal people and other RTS in comparison, so making another one was retarded. But the flop was tremendous, I thought it was going to be low but not this low.

And yeah, the game really is dog water. It is bland and insipid as white bread.

Besides SC which is arguably the most recognizable but also the most shitty to start with (and stay) most RTS aren't that hard
They're indepth tho, and most have several layers to them

I guess it should be reviewed one by one because I do remember some games that had obscure commands that were game changers when used and such. But AoE is pretty easy to understand. C&C games are spam, DoW is really basic but fun, etc. It gets tricky with things like CoH where there's some values that you won't ever know how they interact unless doing trials on each unit, or SupCom which is command heavy. BAR has several advanced commands that aren't explained but in a tutorial video on youtube but it's got QoL out of the ass so anyone can jump in and play.

I don't know exactly. Being a PC user with a keyboard doing commands like Shift, CTRL and ALT isn't as esoteric as it seems.

It's crazy that they got all this free marketing and goodwill and it still flopped massively. They even had that tournament with a development build, I actually tuned in and watched and it was hilariously unbalanced, the angel race just spammed one unit and won every game. That's about when I checked out I think, saying this as a big BW fan. seeing the game actually get played made me go
>oooh so it's starcraft 2 with creeps
and I lost interest pretty quick

The whole project was predicated on the idea that SC2 is a good game and personally I just don't think it is, but all the assumptions of the project flowed from that
>these ex-blizzard devs will surely make a good game
...because they made SC2 and that was good, right?
>it's important to invest in pathfinding and make sure big deathballs can move fluidly
...because SC2 has good pathfinding and its deathball combat is what people want, right?
>we can split the campaign into parts and sell it piecemeal and players will eat it up, with cosmetics and other bullshit on top
...because SC2 did that
>the esports scene will be huge
...because SC2 gets high budget tournaments, I guess?
etc. etc.

They wanted to make SC2: 2, but failed in pretty much every way. they didn't have the brand, they didn't have the team, they didn't have the talent or experience, they squandered their comparatively limited funding. And even if they DID succeed, the game still would've probably flopped because SC2 isn't even that good.

All the while they constantly referred to "starcraft" and refusing to admit that they only meant 2.
