Sonic 3 by itself was still as much content as 1 and 2 by themselves.

I never played this and I played 2 constantly. Never beat it either.

Realistically how mad were Sega about not being able to advertise MJ's involvement?

That's an expansion pack, it's different.
It's like what Brood War was to StarCraft 1, Firestorm to Tiberian Sun, Yuri's Revenge to Red Alert 2.

No, because barely anyone got the level select code to work due how strict the timing was for it.

>play sonic 3 "the intended way"
>launch base gets neutered
>lose big arms
>lose stranger in moscow credits
How did they get away with this?

I'd say that they were more mad at the american branch for making that marketing deal with McDonalds, resulting in a really rushed development cycle.

Sonic 3 is really a whole game for expectations of the time. As kids nobody knew about the split because it wasn't obvious, it felt like Sonic 3 was its own game and Sonic & Knuckles was the sequel basically like Sonic 4.

Also the split was a good thing because the Lock-On technology was the coolest gimmick as a kid and you got to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and you could plug in random carts to get a Blue Sphere level and it was like finding a secret it was awesome.

What was the reaction to Sonic 3 like back in the day? Obviously nowadays people call 3&K the best in the series but I can't help but wonder what people thought when the game just abruptedly ended at Launch Base, no ebin fight in space like in 2.

I remember being confused that it ended at launch base zone, thinking i needed to get all the chaos emeralds, then it still ending there, but when knuckles came out and I got to continue my save to be levels and there were little story cutscenes and the like showing master emeralds it was the hypest fucking thing and death egg zone was worth the wait

I still think Sonic 3 is better without Sonic & Knuckles. At the very least the Sonic 3 part is better than the Sonic & Knuckles part.

People were somewhat lukewarm on it, based on mag reviews from back in the day. It also didn't sell as much as Sonic 2, so it wasn't as regarded as a classic, also mostly because it was only half of the game.

My reaction to it was that it was really really fun to play and replay and I liked the music a lot.

It was obvious to everyone that it was only half a game given that you have this third character you see throughout the game that you can't play as (except in Competition Mode), and there only being 6 Zones to Sonic 2's 11. Because Capcom was pumping out one SFII revision after the next, people thought that SEGA was going to follow suit with either a Sonic 3 Special Edition or Sonic 4 to complete the other half of the story.
The OST was very well received, albeit the miniboss music feeling out of place.
