you dont really need to be that good at any particular area of knowledge, you can make something great and a dream of yours while keeping it basic. sure youre not making the most fleshed out 3D action game ever but theres much to explore, that will surely give you experience for a real game
if you keep it simple and realistic, even if you are very clueless you can go quite far
