It's so weird because all they had to do was port the originals so people could experience them as they were, but instead they kept insisting on making Klonoa 1 fully 3D, and decided the art direction of Klonoa 2 could be improved, ultimately robbing both games of their charm.

I watched a video recently that pointed out it wasn't just the visuals they fucked up, but entire music cues and facial animations. Music will keep playing where it faded out temporarily in the original, and changes in the generic character model's face just aren't there, which locks a lot of Klonoa's smaller emotional moments behind him just blankly staring at things he'd at least have a mildly concerned look for. Klonoa really can't catch a break as a series man.

But I have a much better system that I'm working on right now to use for RPG games. It can actually load tilemaps and other assets during runtime. Though I've never made it compatible with any of my platforming engines.

Also... I think I've noticed that the music hitches very slightly when the visual hiccup happens. Also the visual thing doesn't happen when I'm paused i.e. no music is playing. This makes me pretty sure that my PS2 is having trouble reading the disc for one of two reasons, causing the game to stutter a tiny bit. This might even explain why it doesn't happen with The Bouncer, the levels are so fucking small in that game that I bet it loads all the music in at the start of the level and doesn't have to access the disc again! So in conclusion, my theory is either:
A) it's harder for it to read the burned DVD-R.
B) my optical drive is dying.
If its option A, it probably isn't good for it to continue playing burned discs, putting more strain on it. That's just my intuition. If the same problem occurs on a good condition legit copy, I can be pretty confident that my optical drive is starting to die, in which case I'm fucked either way.
The problem is minor enough that I can continue to play like this, it's not even really noticeable unless I stop and pay close attention to look for it. My point being, I'll continue playing if the majority of people want me to, but I kinda want to wait and see how the legit copy fares.

They're definitely not. Here's what Lunatea's Veil looks like with the CRT shaders I have. it smooths out the pixelated edges, but it doesn't have the same contrast.

Actually, this preset seems to emulate the contrast much more accurately. It's definitely doing something inbetween frames because just screenshotting it makes it look very jagged, but in motion it looks pretty alright.

This specific angle without shaders for reference. It's not perfect, but I'd probably consider this good enough for me to replay it on emulator. I don't know what settings to mess with to add more contrast though, I can see how much brighter the sky and red parts of the plane are in the real CRT.
