The Eternal Debate

A good story in videogames is worthless unless the gameplay is at least average.

Good gameplay can stand on its own without a good story.

There's no need to create some faggot tribalism debate over which is better.

Ideally, they work together, but you can have gameplay without story and still have it be a game. A story without gameplay is just a novel. Visual novels tend to just be electronic choose your own adventure stories.

Aesthetics and art design are more important than both.

Gameplay is more important than story in general, but if a story is actively horrible it can still ruin a game no matter how fun the gameplay is.

games with great story still need at least passable gameplay to be successful (see FF14, Witcher 3, The Last of Us, etc)

games with great gameplay do not need any story to be successful (see every MOBA, every FPS, every fighting game, every Soulslike, every Roguelike, etc)

Depends on what I want out of the game. Even though I liked Xenoblade X, I like that the mainline games have a bigger focus on narrative. Meanwhile, for the Ys series I fucking hate how story heavy the games have gotten.
Anonymous No.723451224 [Report]
>>723448454 (OP)
Both. For the synergy to work at its best the mechanics of the game should reinforce the themes and mood the story is presenting. Either can stand alone on its own and be great, but to truly achieve what this art is capable of, they need to reach ludonarrative resonance

Story is more important to me, but it really depends on what you want at that moment. Sometimes I play a game just for the mechanical fun it brings. Though a game with a bad story and good gameplay is always more disappointing than a game with poor gameplay and a good story.
Anonymous No.723456601 [Report]
My favorite games are all story focused, but i like games with good gameplay and almost no story like the Mario games. But i'd never play a game with an actively bad story
Anonymous No.723456852 [Report] >>723460813
I will never understand why storyfags don't just fuck off to a medium that is better suited for story telling. I'm not saying I want there to be zero story or anything, but if it's the primary thing you look for in a game, there are a million other places that do it better
Anonymous No.723456920 [Report]
Gameplay.
I've enjoyed games that are gameplay focused, games that are story focused, and games that are both depending on what I'm in the mood for. But overall, I can deal with a game where the plot isn't all that (unless it's really that egregious) if the gameplay is solid and functional, which it usually is. Not so much the other way around usually.

Good gameplay can convey the story/narrative.
Good story can make sure that the gameplay isn't weighed down with shit that isn't fun to play and doesn't mesh well.
One works for the benefit of the other and vice versa.
>>723456852
Because very few media can actually get you immersed in the value systems and functioning of a world with quite the same efficacy as a game. A game can get you invested in something that would otherwise be very alien to you without a direct analog to something you are invested in.

I value art design, setting, atmosphere as much as I value gameplay. If a game is boring to look at, then it doesn't matter if the gameplay is good, I need something that grabs my attention and pulls me into the world.

In most cases the gameplay is just a dvd menu while the majority of your time is spent pressing next through dialogue boxes. People don't play this shit for the gameplay, it's for the atmosphere, world building, characters and narrative.
You can even remove the gameplay entirely and it becomes a visual novel, they love that too.

I find myself mostly nostalgic for memorable levels and music from games like vanilla wow and spyro rather than actual "story" moments
I want immersion and cutscenes are the complete opposite of that
