You can feel there's a really big shift in mega design philosophy in this game compared to x/y and ORS, in these most mega designs just boiled down to

So a lot of them were just giving the Pokémon spikes, bigger arms, sharper claws, more bulk, etc. Just taking what the Pokémon already does and doubling down on it.
In ZA they wanted to get more creative. It's no longer just about making a Pokémon look meaner, it's about giving a new spin on their design, so they have some sort of gimmick compared to their normal counterpart. I think that was a big mistake and this is what regional varients were made for instead. Not all new megas are like this mind you, and the ones who stick to this previous design philosophy aren't getting bitched about much like Froslass
