Don't remember the gadgets for Super Sonic Speed, but 95% of tracks use Shadow/Blaze in Silver's car (it looks like a bike helmet). Blaze's car is used on a few tracks, and Trail Runner on exactly one. Check the records to see which ones use which.

And you might want to get used to neutral drifting your level 1s when using the SS time trial setup, it makes keeping your line clean a lot easier compared to slamming your wheel one way or the other. You can slam it like normal snaking after you filled the first bar. Focus on level 3s, some 2s in sections where 3 isn't viable.

Just do whatever the top leaderboards have. Typically all races can be summed up as Straight path, Lots of Offroad, and "Shit fuck it has both air and water segments"
More often than not your main combo will be Shadow/Blaze with Neo Lightron. It has the highest speed for a handling vehicle, and Shadow/Blaze have identical stats with the highest speed stat

There's usually at least fifteen seconds of leeway between S Rank and the world record for each track. You want a setup that gets you to max rings by the end of the first lap at the latest, gets you consistent boost uptime (usually level 3s every 3.3 seconds or faster), and bonus speed sources like Ring Boost. Plenty of ways to check those boxes

All the tracks so far I've done (first 4 cups) didn't really require any additional ring generation for S ranks, although I can see it being a nice convinience if you don't want to minmax gathering them lap 1
Level 2s give the same speed as level 3s so if you're comfortable with cranking those out you don't really need to hold drift long

Mario Kart intermissions are fairly nice to look at and Nintendo did a good job making the world look nice and feel coherent. The issue with them is that they are almost all just gently curving roads that all start to feel the same to play. Obstacles are often cosmetic where running into traffic causes a hit animation to play, but doesn't actually slow you down and bullet bills that are fired over your head. Applying the games mechanics also tend to slow you down more than just driving, so the only purpose is allowing you to bag without it being obvious. In contrast, even the most straight cross worlds all at least feel unique to play with real obstacles to avoid and boost pads that are worth hitting.

imo I don't think there is enough burst speed factors to make frontrunning very viable. rings give you 20 speed at 100 and even with drift boosts the most you are hitting is 235 (250 if you have 100 rings) which is what, 50%-75% more than resting speed of like 170-190. It sounds like a lot but in reality it doesn't really let you disappear from the pack very often, esp with slipstream builds that let players hit these high speeds by just being behind you.
