In the mid-00s, Japan got it into its head that anime and fanservice games were low budget affairs for a niche audience that's only interested in a couple of genres (fighting games and JRPGs). Even when there were several multi-billion dollar active anime IPs, they never ditched that mindset. They remain extremely timid.

China views anime games as a severely underexploited scene with mainstream appeal, and South Korea does the same for fanservice. That's why the Japanese are getting kicked around by China and South Korea. I wish that Japan was still in charge because the Chinese have to deal with government censors and South Korea is retarded with their monetization, and Japan creates the best girls in the world when they're not on a leash.

They showed that anime games have been placed into an arbitrary box and also showed that massive turn based games being a thing of the past was a self-inflicted prophecy. And Ananta is at least going to have a big launch.

And then there's Marvel Rivals, Stellar Blade, Wuchang, and The First Descendant. The latter has fallen off, but all these games show that gamers are biting at the bit for high quality fanservice-centric games that don't make the players feel like they're being thrown scraps. Nier Automata started that, but Japan has, again, remained timid about throwing a budget at it and being bold in their execution.
