It should have railroaded the player more. The game pretends like we care about all these characters and side-quests but they're actually the most obtuse part of the game. Also, the great fairies may as well not exist because there's literally zero reason to upgrade any armor and the special costume armor pieces you get rewarded with from the Underground and other side-quests can't be upgraded anyway. The main plot has the great idea with an "evil" version of Zelda fucking things up around the Hyrule but it's executed so shittily and squandered the potential; like the rest of the story and characters in the game.

I think for me it was a combination of all of the Sheika architecture from the last game disappearing from the world, NPCs not recognizing link, and the really dumb evil zelda mystery the game tries to force. Like, I think it's really lame that as soon I saw the blonde dragon, I was instantly able to piece together that Zelda was sent back in time and was turned into a dragon to preserve herself into the present.

Japanese work culture and the natural inefficiency of large publishers has created an environment where Nintendo can't make a good Zelda game.
This is a work environment where Fujibayashi nervously leaves a first draft first draft for Aonuma and he cheerfully responds with "lmao, tl;dr" before giving it the full OK with no further alterations. The central building mechanic is fundamentally disconnected from the rest of the game, with the exception of the single instance that lets gamers optimize the fun out of it with the two-fan bike. Apart from that single build, there's no actual reason to build anything. Fast travel/towers plus a single Zonai wing trivializes all traversal, and most all builds are not powerful enough to be useful in combat.
Playing the game without building anything is not just some self-imposed challenge, it's the most optimal and least frustrating way to play the game.
