I'm 35 and played all these games growing up. Savestates, rewind and fast forward are all good. A lot of old games had ahitty time wasting segments, so being able to quickly reload a shitty minigame you need to finish or fast forward slow battle transitions is great. People getting mad about that are like the retards pissing and shitting when people use anything other than roll + R1 in From games. You're not hardcore for putting up with bad mechanics.

If the person bought the game, they should be allowed to interact with that game in whatever way that brings them joy, even if it's God Mode™ NoClip™ cheating it all the way.
To me, Half Life 1 was about the immersion in that place, you felt like you were in a sci fi movie. Missing the jump over a chasm and having to start over didn't contribute that much to the fun I was getting from that game, so I didn't mind using a save state on the difficult portions.
You can absolutely moderate yourself and only use save states to facilitate "stupid" challenges like jump-timing and other shit that you KNOW you would succeed if you spent the several minutes repeating them. In fact it might detract fun frmo the game if you didn't use the save states.
In cases such as those rehearsal / repetition challenges, the save states are very very helpful in maintaining the game fun.

Space saving. The game was designed with that in mind though most of the time. Lots of retro vidya have "lives" because levels are meant to be endurance tests. This isn't as popular of a design choice any more simply because attention spans have been obliterated but it's a conscious choice. Bloating the game isn't a real thing because there was never the expectation that old games would give you x hours per dollar. If anything it was the opposite expectation that games were played more casually in terms of consecutive hours spent and were shorter.

In my experience, arcade style games actually fit better into a busy schedule. I had a period of heavy work where the only games I played were touhou, because you can practice a stage in a few minutes and it forces you to focus which is a nice way to destress. A modern game will make you sit through intros, have long time-waster animations and cutscenes for everything and you might need to wait for a checkpoint to even stop playing. Arcade games are pure gameplay and you don't even need to remember that much because the skill you gain is mostly unconscious.

That aside I don't care if I beat it or not, I'm not one to brag about beating singleplayer games. At best I beat uh, Shining Force before emulators came into my life. There's not much else because I was given a cheat code compendium special edition magazine that I just barreled through my other Genesis games with back then. There was a news story recently titled something like "Critical Thinking is a Vanishing Skill" that was centered on Canadian students that even acknowledged they didn't think about the assignments much now and that their own skills had gotten worse. I literally got watery-eyed after I defeated Moriya on The Last Blade 2 (MAME version), after spending a couple of weeks fighting him (it was 15 ~ 30 min gaming sessions almost each day), getting absolutely demolished by him. It's 2 rounds, so after I lost I'd reload the save state where the fight began.
I was sad not bc I finally defeated him, but because he cries for his sensei ("shishio!!") when you knock him out, and I had started appreciating that character so much for giving me fun for all those days. He looks cool and has a bunch of strong moves.
I reloaded the save state where the battle began and fought him again, this time winning by timeout (waiting for the timer to run out while the opponent has less health), and he just kneels in frustration. Less painful this way

The only way it's cheating is if you were going to lose something but the savestate/rewind prevented you from doing so.
If you were going to lose money in pokemon from losing a fight but loaded a state that's cheating. If you were going to die in Mario and lose a life but rewound that's cheating.
If you misclicked an item in a shop and rewound to undo it that's fine. If you beat the boss, but decided to load a save state so you could fight it again for practice (and/or fun) that's fine.
