They're essentially a society on the brink of moving from hunter/gatherer to agrarian living right next to a medieval society. They fall to disease and getting maimed all the time, usually due to injury to their legs. Most of them are expected to die, and only survive because they can move over and leech off of the superior society, who generally don't care about their presence.
