The modern Windows experience:
>Windows has some annoying behavior
>there is no user-facing setting to change it
>there's a group policy setting, but actually whoops it doesn't actually work
>only way to actually get Windows to stop doing gay shit is to go deep and fuck with the registry and system files
>doing so results in system instability that turns Windows into way more of a ticking timebomb than it already is
>either performance degrades to an unacceptable level or Windows straight up bricks itself
>reinstall Windows
>repeat from step 1
Linux desktop still has issues, but my games unironically run more stably on a fresh Bazzite install than a fresh Windows 11 install.

Steam does not support windows 7 and 8 as of 2024 - this doesn't mean it won't run on it, just that they won't care if it doesn't work for you.
W7 came out in 2009 so 2024-2009 = 15
W8 came out 2012 so 2024-2012 = 12
W10 came out 2015 so 12 years from 2015 is 2027, 15 years from 2015 is 2030.
2030 would be my bet.

>Do video games work on mint?
Most steam games work fine but they run like shit. There are better distros for games but I've only tried mint so far.
When I say they run like shit.. Bad fps, occasionally stuttering, problems loading in textures and the gpu fans drowning out any chance I have at hearing the speakers.
I tried Linux mint mostly because w11 sends my fans screaming but so does Linux where as w10 doesn't so I'm sticking to that.
Also.. I tried Linux mint for the no bloat which is fantastic but then comes the headache of finding software that isn't mainstream, then having to run wine or virtual machines just to install those programs.. I mean if you work in I.T settings like programming or just any coding you'll be used to things like terminal and Linux will feel like home but for the average person that just wants to play vidya & watch porn then Windows is the obvious choice even if Bill gates is watching you jerk off to questionable anime.
I went back to 10, fuck it.

I thought a special licence was needed for LTSC, never would have guessed there was a crack for it never mind such an openly available crack without MS shutting it down. Don't you worry about security risks? They only do updates like 2/3 times per year don't they? These systems aren't meant for everyday use it kinda feels like a ticking timebomb.

Back in August, I originally switched my Win10 install drive from CSM to UEFI to enable Secure Boot in order to run Battlefield 6, but that caused my computer to crash so I switched back to CSM for the time being.
Last week, I updated to Win11 on a fresh install and I got two crashes, but I suspect that is an issue due to having 16 GB of ram installed.
I know that 16 GB shouldn't be a problem, but for whatever reason, it's causing issues on my machine and that's why I ordered 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) as that seems to be the easiest fix for this problem. MoBo only have two slots.
I guess my issue is memory leakage, but I'm not computer savvy enough to confirm that that is the problem.

are you actually getting into windows or are you failing your memory training? You might just have an unstable memory OC and need to pump more volts into your SOC and DIMMs. Consider look into safe voltage for your mobo/cpu and make sure your bios is updated.
A decent way to test stability is set up hwinfo64 to alert you on WHEA errors and run some stress tests like linpack, y-cruncher, aida64, and OCCT. OCCT handles the alerts itself but the payment model pisses me off
that or just play a modern frostbite game like BFV or battlefront 2. Shit hits your ram hard

I have literally never had this issue ever. DISM never finds any issues with the windows install, it's stable, and everything is the same. Idk if it's how I'm doing it or what but I think the fear around it is largely from upgrading from xp to 7, 7 to 8, or 7 to 10. 11 was so similar to 10 that it didn't seem to fuck anything up. Like any drivers you use on 11 were all just 10's, etc

Windows updates have caused me some issues in the past. The most notable one was when my PC would occasionally refuse to shut down, permanently stuck on black screen. Then you either have to rollback the update or wait for them to issue a fix which will take them AT LEAST a month. Then there's an ongoing issue with GPU partitioning and Hyper-V, which they've introduced in june or july this year and refuse to fix it for some fucking reason. So you have to block all updates on the VM if you want gpu-p to work. I'm assuming it's not a widespread problem that only affects some hardware configurations, so they're probably aren't even aware of it.
Hardly an 11 or an LTSC issue though, more like a Microsoft issue. Honestly it's mind boggling, seems like they don't do QA at all.

you have to be careful with bios updates sometimes. I had a gigabyte x370 mobo lying around from 2017 and this year wanted to put a 5700x in it for a friend and it needed an update to add cpu support. Considering how many bios updates there were between 2017 and 2025, jumping all the way to the newest version was literally spelled out as a bad idea on their website. I had to incrementally pick certain versions. Luckily I had dual bios in case it got fucked, God I hate motherboard bios chips

It might seem a hassle, but both at work and friends/family have reported weird slowdowns and in general waiting forever for stuff until I reimage their machines with fresh 11 and every issue went away. Its possible to troubleshoot it, but it involves digging way deep beyond what sfc, dism, chkdsk and cleanmgr can do for you. And then it's no guranteed something didn't break on the way.

I did a dual boot with both w11 and Linux mint to try them and desu they seemed very similar in performance though w11 gaming was way better by a long shot but the hassle or "learning curve" as lincux keep saying is something you have to ask yourself, is it really worth it?
I came to the conclusion that people who work in I.T or just love typing "code" will absolutely love Linux but if you hate typing like I guess most people do then you'll not like Linux so much. I mean once you spent the day installing all your main software you'll never really have to touch terminal again but is the microsoft spying on you worth the hassle?
As for installing games it's probably easiest to use a virtual machine running w10 within Linux then you can just download exe files and not have to chase around looking for .run files. There's wine & proton too but I never got around to testing those as much
Having said that.. As much as I dislike typing, messing around with terminal/ ms-dos etc does give a somewhat satisfying feeling knowing that you've told the computer what to do and exactly how you want it to execute the task unlike MS where it's all left click to accept.. Feels like Linux is a personal preference on superiority being sudo and not some left click cuck

it's a lot better than it used to be but it still has some warts and you'll lose a little performance vs windows. suspend has been an issue in the past so you'd want to check that.
I played like ~20 next fest demos recently (rtx 3060) and only one of them had issues, but reading the reviews, it sounds like it was poorly behaved on windows as well. all my usual games work fine. some newer multiplayer games with kernel anticheat you'd be shut out of entirely.
try it out, you'll probably find issues and annoyances, it will come down to whether those are less than windows's (which was finally the case for me this year)

Gentoo is basically "you build your own hammer", everything is compiled from the source, you can tweak every little detail of everything and you must be very familiar with linux to use it, and as everything is compiled, it takes a long while to get a system up and running.
If you want to learn about every nut and bolt of the OS, it is the lowest way other than "linux from scratch".
But if you don't want to lose 10 years of your life, the other recommendations are better.

I can't code and use the terminal as little as possible. The desktop enviroments have really evolved to just have a gui for everything for people like me who's primary use for an OS is to game. Currently on Manjaro and either every Steam game I want just runs, every non-steam game is automatically downloaded through Launchers like Lutris and Heroic.
As for .exe files, there's a tool for that, download Bottles, double-click an .exe and Wine treats it as if it was running on Windows for you. Im not telling you you're wrong, but I was in the same boat thinking linux meant having to compile my own games. Its not and since swapping two years ago I've had to help out friends with windows updates more often than I've had to troubleshoot my own machine.

They constantly turn everything back on upon an update. With the amount of time you're going to spend on maintaining the desired state of your system, may as well just learn linux.
Also, this system is a complete black box. What makes you think, that the switch in the user interface which "turns it off" actually turns it off, and isn't a baby pacifier without any real effects? There is literally no reason for them to not implement it that way, because they can get away with it. The belief that it's not implemented that way hinges exclusively on your assumption of their good will. Microsoft's good will, yeah.

What's wrong with your TV? I'm pretty sure the only issue Linux has is specifically HDMI 2.1 when used with AMD GPUs. But if you're using DisplayPort, USB-C or just an nVidia GPU you should have a normal display output.

The issue is HDMI 2.1 on Wayland. A week after the switch my HDMI cable broke and with the new one the screen was stuck at 4K30Hz. X11 can handle 60Hz just fine, my second TV can handle it just fine, but either is worse than running 1440p60Hz on the main screen. I discovered this while making animations for my game, so I really need those FPS.
I'll like just return the cable and try a different one, but it'll still be a while until I'm back in the city where I bought it.
The bigger issue is the graphic tablet. With every system update it gets worse and since there's three competing drivers debugging takes forever.
I have to stop myself from wasting time on these issues, but it's hard. After tasting freedom it feels so dirty to be back on windows.

Windows UI peaked at 2000.
Everything organized in neatly cascading folders or menus, you always knew where everything was.
Before the ribbon faggotry, before your software knowing better than you which features you'll use the most and bringing them to the front whether you want them there or not.
Even the built in file search was functional back then, can you imagine?
XP was already the beginning of the decline.

Microsoft is going to directly integrate the third-party agentic AI Manus into Windows 11, which is going to be given all necessary permissions by default to be able to directly interface with and execute tasks against your local filesystem.
They're going to replace the built-in start menu search and taskbar search with Copilot as well.
And they're going to add voice-activated "Hello Copilot" AI queries, meaning your mic will be constantly on and listening.

Because these people are what keep an estimated 30% of the Windows user base on Windows, rather than evacuate to a Linux distro. For numerous reasons, Microsoft needs that dominant market position, or they''re going to death-spiral into non-existence. The root reason of all of them, being that they don't get by on selling a good product, they get by on selling a bad product that you're stuck using because everyone ELSE is using it and it introduces intentional incompatibility with anything else.

They're that incompetent. I might be angry if I paid for them, lol
Anyway gonna just switch to Debian when I get tired of their brown shit, just like I stopped using Twitch as soon as the first unblockable

i don't get normalfags. If the internet looked like it looks without adblocker on, I'd not use it at all. As soon as I get inconvenienced I just drop everything. If games weren't pirateable I'd not play them ever
I would never watch new movies if it wasn't for pirated copies, going to modern cinema is a dismal experience. Stench of bloated corn everywhere, cattle pens that stand for ticket booths, overpriced everything, shit tier service.

I have and I feel ill.
It looks like modernist shit to its core. The subtle differences in font feel like a corporate overlord is breathing heavily in my face in what was supposed to be My Inner Sanctum. I've used ExplorerPatcher and debloat and changed some things in regedit to unfuck it all. It's honestly helped. It's so fucked win11 cant even do basic transparency settings on the taskbar. "accent colors"? what the fuck are you talking about just let me have my gold taskbar at 50% opacity you RETARDS. The flat designs of all the iconography all looks like shit but everyone already knew that. The subtle way everything in windows explorer is spaced out a bit too far bothers me but I don't think theres much of a fix for that. Ripping out that fucking LastActiveClick in regedit did a lot, not being able to just click the stacked icons in the taskbar to instantly show all the available windows was driving me nuts. What I really dread is setting up all the custom programs and pirated softwares again. I don't even know if adobe CS6 runs on win11.
All in all a terrible change and I regret it immensely. Shouldve just went with win10 LTSC.
Thinkin bout dat Linux at this rate

I went with EndeavourOS and I'm actually surprised at how easy it has been so far. I've had a couple of hiccups here and there, but debloating win11 would have been worse for sure.
I'm also surprised at how my computer is now faster, all of it. File system loads are instant, search actually works, configuration interfaces are not fucking horrid and stuff is just very customizable.
I have to occasionally deal with console stuff of course, but it hasn't been a problem so far, and I've yet to find an issue that chatgpt hasn't solved in less than 10min.
I've even been able to pirate stuff through wine. Really quite pleasently surprised so far.

System level programs are located in /usr/bin but you don't need to worry about that because you can just invoke the program from the terminal.
Config files are in /etc, and temporary files that get wiped on shutdown are in /tmp. You don't need to know about the rest. You can mount any drive into any location meaning that you can split your OS across multiple drives.
User files are in /home/user which can be abbreviated to ~ . You can find user configs in ~/.config and data files like Steam games in ~/.local/share
