They are about the same as those of the Wii, even newer models are terrible even for lightgun type games.

Even Forefront which every influencer is glazing right now is just mid af. It doesn't even do one thing well. It just does everything serviceable. Most "good" vr games do one thing really well then shit the bed on everything else. Forefront doesn't even have good gunplay. Weapon mounts whole moving suck. Drivers/pilots just use them to crash into the spawn so you can never use em tactically. Maps are just OK and there will be like max 4 on the full game. Game modes are just ok. Its basically Contractor$ without modded maps which is what made Contractor$ the best fps for a few years. Literally a bootleg big mac without even the secret dance

At least not as their main source of gaming. The day I can put on and take off a VR headset like I do my glasses and still get the same or better quality, then I'll pay attention.

Fat people and dnalets are what went wrong.
Alyx is ruined by extremely slow movement and boring combat that isn't interactive
Re4 is ruined by not letting you do the melee moves yourself and not adjusting the difficulty for free movement
Then you have the other side of things where there's no content and the AI can't fight worth a shit aka battle talent and blade and sorcery

Valve shafted Carmack just as badly as Facebook and Zenimax.
Occulus was not ready yet and Valve proceeded to announce it was nearly done and pushed it too hard, then made their own.
Every brand released their own lenses based on reverse engineering without contributing or improving a damned thing.

The wiimotes are just as terrible as they were back in 2005.
I used a set yesterday and even for serious apps VR sucks, for gaming you sacrifice a lot and there is nothing to it except porn.

Yeah, I think the whole VR idea needs some more time in development until they can cook something truly good. I mean, it's good for some novel applications, but for most traditional games it still feels a bit odd to play using VR, IMO. I also realize the concept has been cooking for some decades now, but it is what it is.

Besides, it is an extra gimmicky gadget that people need to buy to use, so there's that, too. Not many people are willing to spend some considerable amount of dough to get a product that'll be used decently in just few games, unless they somehow released an amazing game that made full use of the VR set capabilities.

The absolute backbone of the timeline of what fucked VR (for now) :
>Facebook buys Oculus
>makes Oculus Quest 2 (biiiiig hit)
>buys up a shitload of VR devs, companies, and engineers
>gets too big for their britches and decides to leverage VR gibs into making a gazillion gorrillion dollars by making "The Metaverse"
>Metaverse (Meta Horizons) flops horrifically
>Facebook pulls out and cancels most projects, scaring off most companies from touching VR at all anymore
>time passes, no new major headsets or games to "sell" VR as a concept, and standalone shit is pretty dead too
>Apple goes full-Apple and makes their own ultra-premium gold-standard VR headset
>people get hyped that a big company is injecting money into the VR space
>the headset doesn't do jack shit and is just hilariously expensive e-waste, a gold-plated pile of nothing that doesn't connect to or with anything and doesn't even play games
>everyone sighs and goes back to watching VR die

TL;DR:
>Facebook funding VR? Good.
>Facebook using VR money on a billion-dollar scheme to make more money? Bad.
>Facebook scheme failing so bad they lose a fuckload of money? Good.
>Facebook losing a fuckload of money and taking VR as a whole down with it? Bad.

There was a time when VR was making a comeback and it's growing organically with an ecosystem of different companies and startups experimenting with the idea. The industry wasn't mature yet but it's growing. Facebook's purchase of Oculus and other VR developers over the years was the moment when the industry, which wasn't fully ready for mass adoption yet, was brute-forced to grow in its own terms. Didn't help that PCVR's growth is as slow as molasses.

A. Valve put out 3/5 games (counting the lab and hand job as one game) for VR not one you retard
B. The problem isn't that there's not an arbitrary amount of "VR gaems" of which there's tons of shitware for any type of gameplay you want, the problem is that general use of VR and not just for dedicated VR applications sucks dick.
Look at the steam deck.
It's basically painless to run everything worth playing on steam and emulating everything and it's great.
This retarded idea that it needs to be "more innovative" is fucking retarded and getting in the way of

The current greatest hindrance is that no company is publishing open standards for creating new controllers for their headsets, so every headset just has ewaste, Oculus Rift clone pack-in controllers with no variation and only SteamVR is getting some niche new controllers that are just VRChat slop to appeal to whales.
The former greatest hindrance was that there was barely any Linux support, which has been "solved" by standalone slop.

VR headsets only simulate the visual aspect of virtual reality while also inhibiting the interacticity with the world in terms of movement. Like how in Alyx most people uses the teleport function to move around because moving a character with a controller while youre head is separate from that movement is nauseating and weird. Virtual Reality in Games HAS to start with movement through the game world and that is far more complicated to produce than just a headset. The visual aspect is incredibly overrated. Look at racing games, where VR doesnt face the same issues as Alyx does as sitting still in a car perfectly alligns with the vr perspective: simracers still dont give a shit about it. What do they give a shit about? Steering wheels with force feedback, pedals, racing seats. Because thats what matters when playing. The whole VR headset trend is based on a complete misjudgement of how people connect with virtual reality.

It's still to inconvenient. Headsets, despite recent efforts to compact things are too bulky. Still too expensive for what you get in entertainment.

Honestly, until they invent literal contact lenses that can perfectly blend normal vision, Augmented Reality and full VR, and are somehow powered/controlled by the body itself, and don't cost very much it won't ever take off. VR as it is is just too inconvenient for normal life.

nah the implemented is completely different. the Wii can only track on a 2D plane, and the Kinect only works properly if you're facing the camera with your hands exposed. neither are "better", or even minimally good.

>you pay triple that of a Wii console
i paid triple for the Valve's lighthouse system. it also has blindspots (unless you have 4 units, then it is nearly flawless), but is incomparably better to every other IR/camera based tracking solution

Hand tracking is how VR should’ve been in the first place but as with everything else related to VR the tech just isn’t there and it’s buggy as fuck. VR is currently tightly coupled to waggle controls, which is just too much of a jump. I think there's a decent opportunity for K+M or Controller VR experiences but only the PSVR is doing anything with that. The UI-accurate eye tracking from the Apple Vision Pro is also an interesting idea, but beyond foveated rendering and some snazzy menuing it wouldn't have much gaming applicability.

i do think VR could benefit from camera-based tracking, VR gaming would be a lot more immersive if every game had an accurate representation of your body. but that shouldn't be the main thing interfacing you with the world.

Depends on the game, speaking from UE side (but im sure other engines are similar), if you want to do something generic and are fine with the wonky way the standard plugins handle hand interaction its slightly worse than normal 3d games mostly due to player character model.
If you want a game that relies on hand object interaction and want focus on that you're going to spend a ton of time writing logic for that shit.

My experiences could be colored by having an Index. I despise the finger tracked grabbing on those controllers and just wish I had a grab button and only one (index) finger tracked instead. Dropping something unexpectedly, grabbing things I didn't intend to grab, the weird muscle memory that comes with trying to grab or drop something while also moving or pressing a button, it all comes together to make things unpleasant. Moving around in VR is fun, but I think a problem with the adoption is that there aren't many VR games where you can kick back and play the game, they're 'active' experiences. I don't relax and pop on a VR game, playing a VR game is an Activity. A fun one, but still.

I'll check out Tea For God, I like the vibe.

VR is cool, and I think the state of the industry is just fine (at least, hardware-wise). The main things are, people don't want to spend the price of a computer on a device that you will probably play like 10 games on, max, a significant portion of people get severe eye irritation or even motion sickness from VR, its an inherently more active and even intimate experience, which not everyone wants, etc. etc. etc.

It works just fine as is, it's just that the device is an inherently niche thing.

I maintain that Gran Turismo 7 (especially if you have a racing setup), Resident Evil Village/4 remake, and Switchback alone make the PSVR2 worth it though.

I don't know why they aren't porting all kinds of light gun and racing games to this thing. Burnout, Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Resident Evil Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles would sell like mad on these things, and development costs would be miniscule.

If it exists it should be good. Should have a future. Should be the best you can make it. Needing more than one good moment too. Enough themselves they can entertain themselves by being themselves. And what suits that/them keeping them company in engagement. In giving their best. Flukes that should be saved but only are entirely by being continued. Or rewarded well so are remembered.

You able to move, get turned around by combat etc, lose your bearings or be "transported", like kicked to water, have to swim.

Feel familiarity of your place as your ship. Different adorns in different games, but moved around enough you could be blind and still get the essentials easy. Sound then, for blind people, sounds hitting structure, clear indication there is something there. Wind moving accross it, some sound that bounces off or ends there. Crew fighting thrown into walls when you are like to hit them, prominant presence of a wall etc obstacle. It highlighted.

Move around. Sit on a bed. A girl could take that as it carried. It a boat, a raft, a hutt on the beach. Somewhere asking her to turn around so the house is explored diffent. A treasure map moved to directed by sights and tasks. Do some good on the way, do some good: in the way door opened by something right after you met it.

Feel some threat you can handle. Get fitness in exploration, exertion a difficulty level, more than what you can do on average a better place, more beautiful, but dangerous. Not just predators, challenge, but in having something powerful remembered. need to have desire enough before that you value what you get instead of become it's slave. Or it's enemy.
